Yes thats worse news
masks do work, but you can't rely on those alone
regional travel ban, curfews would also be a good one for Boris & his team to consider
as for south africa with their new strain, travel ban for that country for time being, and carefully sending a scientist with hazmat suit over to collect blood sample from someone who got that new variant, just to compare against original covid strain and uk strain, i mean it would be good to compare, just to see what you need to do for a possible different vaccine to treat people with that new strain
Apparently they stopped flights coming into the uk from SA on the 24th December ...

Yes the South African Variant is worse
Why is it worse?
It's less contagious as our one.

Says who !?
It’s swept through SA rapidly and was THE dominant strain / variant within a matter of weeks ... quite frankly it sounds horrendous given it’s so virulent .
I don’t pretend to understand the intricacies of this virus but the SA guy on Sky News just then mentioned something about it being somewhat different as the vaccines that are available concentrate on a protein strand or something but the SA isn’t targeting the same area so companies will have to produce vaccines covering a ‘wider base’ ... his words not mine ..
Hopefully somebody else can explain things better than I can .

Life expectancy in Pakistan is something like 68 whereas in the UK it's 79 - 83.
The vast (VAST) majority of Covid deaths are in over-75's.
This is often overlooked when comparing international stats, I think. You can't die of Covid if you've already died of something else... countries with higher life expectancy will see larger case fatality ratios than those with lower expectancy, because in short, "there are more old people around to die from it".

umm, maybe with help of those ''bubbles'' + quick testing
also only allow them in, if you got two negative tests, and not ''one positive test and then a negative test few days later''

China are definitely fudging the numbers but it wouldn't surprise me if the figures are far lower than we expect, East Asia has done pretty well, last I heard, in dealing with the virus despite bearing the brunt of it via proximity to the source.

Yeah so did I but we have had a letter sent out that as they promised to deliver the best experience which means in house teaching along with online so they plan on starting term as normal on monday. But lessons etc will be staggered to not overwhelm staff and we have an asymptomatic centre in the middle of uni for staff and students when they want a test. Another part of the uni is the hub of the community to get tests if they have symptoms and another part of the uni is the hub to get vaccinations. Another part is a massive health innovation centre that is helping into pandemic research. So actually im proud of working there. Im grateful and glad to work. But im scared too.

UK Strain or SA strain not much difference i think, very worrying, i mean both of those have more or less same amount of percentage more dangerous, more contagious than the original covid
There is also thousands of variants of the original covid strain out there...one hope we can cling to is the fact that when viruses mutate they can also make themselves less harmful and in some cases, can also wipe themselves out.

To be fair it’s still early days as regards the SA variant but it is thought to be rather different to all the previous variants/strains and may be somewhat resistant to the vaccines we already have so they will have to ‘tweak’ the new vaccines..

Well they did say it was 70% more effective at latching onto our cells but I saw something today suggesting it was ‘just’ 50% more efficient .
It seems to be ‘attacking’ or ‘attaching’ itself in a very different way .. . attacking a different protein or something ..

To say the South African strain is more problematic than the U.K. variant is “politics rather than science” at this point, said Richard Lessells, an infectious-disease specialist at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Researchers must first do the experiments necessary to understand the new variants, he said. So far, officials have provided little evidence to support the idea that the South African strain is more problematic than the new one first identified in the U.K., where cases are also surging.

Be careful

Report schools to Ofsted if remote lessons are poor, Gavin Williamson tells parents
by Nicola Woolcock, Education Editor
Wednesday January 06 2021, 5.00pm, The Times
Gavin Williamson has provoked anger among head teachers by suggesting that parents should report schools to Ofsted if they felt that the online learning provision was not good enough.
The education secretary told the House of Commons that all schools in England must give children high-quality remote teaching. If parents are unhappy they should complain to the head teacher and ultimately to the watchdog.

Although ...
Excuse copy and paste .
Britain is putting vulnerable people at risk from mutant variants of the coronavirus by delaying the second dose of the vaccine, according to South Africa's top adviser on immunisations.
South Africa is suffering a sharp spike in cases, driven by a new variant that may reduce the effectiveness of vaccines.
That threat has been underlined by new lab tests showing that antibodies may be at least 10 times less effective against the new variant, which is separate to the mutation that was originally identified in England.
Professor Barry Schoub, chair of the South African government's vaccine advisory committee, told Sky News that border controls won't stop the virus and that giving just one dose would reduce protection in the most vulnerable.

https://www.dutchnews.nl/news/2021/01/lockdown-may-be-extended-as-british-variant-takes-hold-at-a-primary-school/
Meanwhile, some 75 positive coronavirus cases have been traced to an outbreak at a primary school in Bergschenhoek on the outskirts of Rotterdam, and 30 of them at least are the more infectious British variant of the virus. Over 750 parents, pupils and teachers at the Willibrord primary school, which is a Catholic faith school, have been tested after the first cases of coronavirus involving the British variant were identified at the school last month. Three of those found to have the British variant are teachers at another school which shares facilities with the Willibrord. The local health board is now expanding its investigation, the AD said.

The spread of Covid in London is "out of control" according to Sadiq Khan, who has declared a "major incident"
It comes as the coronavirus infection rate in London has exceeded 1,000 per 100,000 people.
Major incidents have previously been called for the Grenfell Tower fire in June 2017 and the terror attacks at Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.
Currently, there are more than 7,000 people in hospital with Covid-19, the mayor said.
This is a 35% increase compared to the previous peak of the pandemic, Mr Khan added.

We got a text message to say that our youngest has been assessed as not being in need of a place despite being on the vulnerable list (in special education) and the child of a keyworker. We weren't sending her anyway but now officially don't have the choice.
Some of the parents are... displeased, to say the least.

If parents say they can’t access the online lessons... no laptop, no internet then they are being a considered..
Also pupils with just ONE key worker parent rather than TWO as in the first lockdown .. we are being “encouraged” to contact pupils not accessing online learning and it sounds as though they too will be accepted..
I know Unison are calling for a classroom limit of 50% or Max of 15 per class !!
Apologies for any errors in this post ... I’m off to bed with a banging migraine :(

How is she dealing with it all now TS, you were saying she was finding the break to her routine tough way back during the first Lockdown (iirc)It's not so much the break in routine as the unpredictability; back and forward constant changes with no consistency. She's fine once she's been back in school for a bit, and fine once she's used to the routine at home, which is why we refused to send her back this week. Which is just as well - as she would have been there for literally two days and then told to stay home again for 4+ weeks .

Sky News has a specialist speaking .
Dr Zudin Puthucheary who is a an Intensive & Critical Care Consultant in England.
He paints a terrible picture sadly ..
Hospitals are ready to burst , all staff exhausted etc
We have more patients than we’ve ever had to deal with and less staff than ever to treat them .. plus a critical lack
More worryingly he said that 30% of people needing intensive care will die .. BUT the 70% of those that survive will be DISABLED for YEARS to come !
The virus does so much damage to your system but the main problem is that you will lose over 2kg of muscle mass each DAY !!! If you are in intensive care for two to three weeks you lose a frightening amount of muscle mass .
The staff are now having to make decisions.. who lives and who dies .
Watch out for him on Sky News throughout today .. he will be on a regular loop ..
He finished by saying he was SCARED and ANGRY at the public for not staying at home ..
The footfall is apparently double what it was in the first lockdown when things weren’t that desperate !

Netherlands: fewer positive coronavirus tests, and hospital admissions fall again

Lockdown
Virologist Ab Osterhaus told NPO radio on Friday that the cabinet must now extend the current lockdown. ‘Relaxing it is not on the cards,’ Osterhaus said. Tougher measures, such as a curfew as in Germany, would be an option, he said.
Sources told NOS earlier this week that schools, restaurants, bars and shops were likely to remain closed until the end of January and more places could be shut in an attempt to bring the numbers down.
The cabinet is due to make a decision next Tuesday after consulting the Outbreak Management Team.

The virus does so much damage to your system but the main problem is that you will lose over 2kg of muscle mass each DAY !!! If you are in intensive care for two to three weeks you lose a frightening amount of muscle mass .
I'm certain you must have misunderstood these numbers Zizu. A 13st relatively fit male only has about 33kg muscle mass to start with, and so by your figures if they were in ICU for 4 weeks they would become a black hole.
To add to that, most people in ICU are elderly and thus have significantly less than 33kg to start with.
Coronavirus: Company's apology after £5,000 vaccine offer
A property investment company has offered GP surgeries £5,000 for unused coronavirus vaccine doses.
The Hacking Trust's medical division approached surgeries in Bristol and Worthing offering to pay the money to charity "or the staff member directly".
Robyn Clark, from the Institute of General Practice Management, said it was "just appalling".
The company, based in London, has apologised, saying its "good intentions" were "misinterpreted".
NHS England said people "will rightly take a dim view of anyone who tries to jump the queue".
"The NHS is free at the point of access for everyone who needs it," said Ms Clark.
"What we felt this company was trying to do was jump the queue."
The Bristol-based manager said she worried it could "create more health inequality".
She said: "The JCVI [Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation] is trying to prioritise the vaccine based on the vulnerability to Covid."
The e-mail sent to the GP surgery in Worthing said The Hacking Trust was aware that "many appointments" for vaccinations are not kept, and that it would be interested in being informed of "any no-shows".
A donation of £5,000 would be paid to a staff member or given to charity for each dose it could secure, the e-mail said.
In a statement, the Battersea-based company said it "offered charitable donations to staff or surgeries in this difficult time for any vaccines which were unused".
It added: "We had heard that some vaccines were being unused due to missed appointments. We would apologise that our good intentions have been misinterpreted."
NHS England said it knew "these particular emails were received across the country".
Dr Nikki Kanani, GP and NHS medical director for primary care, said hundreds of NHS teams across the country were "working hard to deliver vaccines quickly to those who would benefit most".
"NHS staff will never ask for, or accept, cash for vaccines," she said.
The Department of Health and Social Care said vaccinations were available from the NHS "for free" and "cannot be sold privately in the UK".

That’s what he said though .. maybe he meant 2kg per week .. Even if one of us is wrong the fact is they’re losing massive amounts of muscle mass which is indeed debilitating..

Sedated coronavirus patients have suffered delusions and hallucinations, and the mental and physical trauma is so devastating some "say they would rather have died ", says London consultant Dr Zudin Puthucheary
Critically ill patients in comas of a working age lose muscle before fat, with around 2-3% of muscle mass typically wasting away a day, which for a 90kg patient would mean a loss of 1-2kg a day.
Dr Puthucheary, an Intensive Care Society national rehabilitation lead, told Mirror Online: "Some people will be able to say in two to three years time that they are happy to be alive.

90kg is 14st, which would be very heavy for an elderly person, so I would imagine less than 1kg/day for the vast majority, definitely not 2+kg a day. Also, all of this is standard for any coma/ICU patient and isn't specific to Covid... It's just what happens when you don't move for days/weeks.
Most people coming out of a coma (medically induced or otherwise) will need some physio rehab but plenty of people exit ICU stays needing minimal physiotherapy.
This rhetoric seems extreme and designed to alarm. I have no idea why any medic would be spreading this "information"... Probably a misguided attempt to scare people into lockdown compliance I would guess.

The UK variant has been found in Spain in two people who have no connection with the UK
I’m don’t think it actually originated/mutated in the UK tbh ..
As from what I understand we were simply the first to identify it due to the extensive testing we’ve been doing in this country ( and go public with it ) .
It’s possibly been spreading all around the world for some time ..

Its just madness now really isnt it. As long as she is on her own and keeping socially distant. Whats up with tat. I go to work and come back home and ho out to the shop later on. Does that mean im leaving the house more than once?

we have no reason to believe that is what she was arrested for other than the caption? don't take everything at face value, she would have been fined rather than arrested if leaving home more than once was the reason
we cant expect the police to police this and then criticise everything they do when we don't know the full story
I think the police have said she was part of anti-lockdown protests in the town breaking all sorts of rules then they set it up so it looked like she was getting arrested for nothing
The protestors set it up that is
....teeerany, teeerany I tell ya...
...there’s a vid in this link, Cherie...it’s not the full story as such, but a bit more of what was happening...

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro20% of hospital cases (1 in 5) needed ICU and 80% of those (4 in 5) needed ventilator giving a total of 16% of hospital cases needing ventilator. The point of needing a ventilator is when survival chances really drop.
HOWEVER
Those stats are from the first wave, when there were fewer treatment options. As things are now, fewer hospital cases end up in ICU and fewer ICU cases end in fatalities. But I don't think there are exact stats.
