Does chlorine kill the coronavirus?
“The coronavirus doesn’t survive in chlorinated water,” infectious disease expert Amesh A. Adalja, MD, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security in Maryland, tells Health.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t get COVID-19 while in a swimming pool. Coronavirus is a respiratory illness, which means it spreads when droplets from the mouth or nose fly through the air. So anywhere you’re interacting with others who are talking, coughing, or sneezing—even if you’re in the water—puts you at risk of inhaling a droplet from an infected person.
Dr. Adalja says the biggest risk of going to the pool lies out of the water. “There can be crowded conditions and common touch surfaces (like the deck and the locker room) that may provide an opportunity for the virus to transmit,” he says.
I'm aware of the crowded conditions being a risk, and the risk once out of the pool in the dry areas.
My point was covid can't survive in the water, if you were 2 metres apart, say lane swimming) it would be no different to walking past someone outside.

Coronavirus: Labour calls for Evictions ban
to be extended
[The government introduced the ban in March
to help those financially hit by the coronavirus lockdown.
Homeless charity Shelter estimates 227,000
private renters have fallen into arrears since the pandemic
and could lose their homes when the
ban on evictions is lifted on 23 August.
The government said it would
offer "appropriate support" to renters.
New evictions in England and Wales had initially been
suspended until 25 June,
but the pause was extended to 23 August.]

The issue of "the highstreet" is a complicated one. It was already dying anyway, companies knew that, most high-street retail workers are aware of that... But lockdown has massively accelerated things by a good 3 to 5 years and its happening all at once rather than gradually store by store.
What makes it complicated is that, because it was just an acceleration of something that was already happening and not a "lockdown related freak occurrence", it's going to be very hard to reverse the trend. People were already abandoning the high street. If Covid does eventually disappear, even that won't be enough to tempt back half of the lost business.
Ita something I'm conflicted about really. I mean I get that the jobs situation is awful, and I also have my reservations about retail money all flowing in the same directions (Amazon et al.) but in the other hand, the consumer choice, better prices, and convenience of online shopping just realistically make the high street experience obsolete. I can't even remember the last time I made a major (let's say £200+) purchase in a physical store. Probably the PS3 in like 2008.
the world has changed forever. The high street needs to be replaced by affordable housing and leisure spaces. This has been patently obvious for some time but high street chains have been hanging on for dear life. I know several online businesses (not retail) that have advanced their business by 3-5 years ahead of expectation, this is largely due to people working from home, and while it may reverse a bit it wont return to how it was before. Airlines, the car industry, transport are all going to have to re-adjust to reflect the new reality. For example train ticket prices are due to rise in January ... that's just not going to realistically happen because they just don't have the numbers travelling.
From a brexit perspective, this event couldn't have come at a better time because it's not just us that are looking for a new norm, it's the whole world. Hold on to your hats ......

You could say that about joggers, are you going to ban jogging?
Actually Kizzy joggers annoy me.
A few times I've been heading to a store, I've seen elderly people now walking in the street, with their masks on.
Then joggers, no masks obviously, come charging along, running past those elderly walking.
Puffing and panting.
No respect for distance either, just running past people walking.
So I'd maybe suggest joggers run where only they can be in open spaces and not in built up public places.
There was a group of them the other morning, all running together too.
Fine out in the country, not where others, or those more vulnerable may be however.

A-level results row: Matt Hancock 'recognises' concerns over medical student places...
The government is warned a "deeply worrying" number of those affected come from areas under-served by doctors.
The health secretary has pledged to do "everything we can" to ensure A-level medical students unfairly downgraded can still get a place at university.
Matt Hancock told Sky News "I absolutely recognise" the concerns raised by the Royal College of GPs that pupils whose marks were lower than their teachers' predictions are missing out on their top choice for further study.
It is just one of the many practical problems thrown up by the exams U-turn earlier this week.
Professor Martin Marshall, chair of the Royal College of GPs, claimed a "large number of potential medical students" have missed out on their university place due to the decision that came five days after results were released last Thursday.
He said it was "deeply worrying" that students affected may come from areas which are under-doctored.
The number of places are "strictly limited" due to a government cap on funding, Prof Marshall added.
At least 20% more places to study medicine are needed just to ensure there are enough GPs in the future, he continued.

Firm linked to Gove and Cummings hired to work with Ofqual on A-levels...
A company run by long–term associates of Michael Gove and Dominic Cummings has been working behind the scenes with the exams agency Ofqual on its disastrous strategy for determining A-level results, the Guardian can reveal.
Public First, a policy and research firm owned by James Frayne and Rachel Wolf, who both formerly worked for Gove, has been involved on the project with Ofqual since June after being granted a contract that was not put out to competitive tender.
Details of the contract have not been made public and Ofqual declined to say how much public money had been spent hiring Public First.
The firm is understood to have been initially contracted to assist Ofqual with communicating its A-level and GSCE results plan to help secure public confidence in the strategy.
A spokesperson for Ofqual said it initially contracted Public First without a tender to work on “insight on public opinion for this year’s exam arrangements”. The spokesperson added: “Public First is currently assisting Ofqual’s small communications team with an unprecedented amount of media interest in a complex policy area.”
Wolf, a former adviser to Gove when he was shadow education secretary, is one of several staff from Public First who are understood to have worked with Ofqual on the approach to the awarding of A-level, BTec and GCSE grades for students, who were unable to take their exams due to the Covid-19 school closures.
A Cabinet Office spokesperson told the Guardian that Gove had not been involved in Ofqual’s appointment of Public First. They said: “The Cabinet Office had no involvement in the contract and did not discuss it with Ofqual.”
The algorithm used by Ofqual downgraded 40% of the A-level grades assessed by teachers under the process set after the exams were cancelled, leading to a storm of protest from students, parents, school leaders and teachers, that culminated in a complete government U-turn on Monday and the system being scrapped.

The R number - the rate of reproduction - of coronavirus in the UK has risen to between 0.9-1.1, according to the Government Office for Science and the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage).
The figures suggest there is a risk that the overall coronavirus epidemic in the UK is growing, government scientists say.
The latest growth rate for the whole of the UK is between minus 3% to plus 1%, a slight change from between minus 4% to minus 1% last week.
The growth rate of Covid-19 transmission reflects how quickly the number of infections is changing day by day.

Organisers of illegal gatherings of more than 30 people could face fines of up to £10,000 under new powers given to police in England from Friday.
People who attend gatherings could be fined £100, doubling on each offence up to £3,200. This level of fine will also apply to those who those who flout the rules around face coverings where they are mandatory - such as on public transport or in shops and supermarkets.
It comes after police in the city of Birmingham said they attended more than 70 unlicensed street and house parties on Saturday night, while police in Huddersfield broke up an illegal rave involving about 300 people.
Meanwhile in London, the Metropolitan Police says it has responded to more than 1,000 unlicensed events since the end of June.

The local headlines are using words like “alarm” and talking about a “bigger, deadlier wave” of Covid-19 in South Korea.
Why? The country has recorded its highest number of daily cases since early March, fuelled by an outbreak at a right-wing church in Seoul called Sarang Jeil that has led to more than 800 infections alone.
South Korea has been here before. An outbreak in a church in February swept through the city of Daegu infecting, at its height, a thousand people a day.
But the difference this time is that the virus has spread through every province in the country except the island of Jeju, and health officials are warning this wave could prove far more devastating.
The problem at the centre of this latest Covid-19 crisis is political. Conservative churchgoers have always despised the current liberal President Moon Jae-in and accuse him of being a communist.
Sarang Jeil’s followers believe that the virus was planted in their church with the aim of closing down all opposition to the Moon government. Some have even accused North Korea of deliberately infecting them.
Health officials are desperately trying to persuade them that this is not a conspiracy and they simply need worshippers to be tested. But on Friday the police had to intervene to get a full list of church members for contact tracing purposes.
Meanwhile the entire country is facing new social distancing measures and public anger towards Sarang Jeil is growing.

Coronavirus: Secondary school pupils may have to wear face coverings in Scotland...
Secondary school pupils in Scotland may have to wear face coverings in corridors and communal areas, Nicola Sturgeon has said.
The first minister said Scotland's Education Secretary John Swinney was in the final stages of consulting with teachers and local authorities over the possible new guidance.
She said a new rule "would go beyond" World Health Organisation (WHO) guidance after the body advised over the weekend that children aged 12 and above should wear face coverings.
https://news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-secondary-school-pupils-may-have-to-wear-face-coverings-in-scotland-12055657
Hong Kong University scientists have reported the case of an apparently young, healthy patient being re-infected with Covid-19, four-and-a-half months after the first infection.
Using genome sequencing, they discovered that the second bout or virus was “clearly different” from the first infection rather than just a continuation or re-emergence of the original one.
Scientists know that people infected by coronavirus develop an immune response as their bodies fight off the virus, and this helps to protect them against it returning. But it is not clear how strong this protection is or how long it lasts.
If people can catch the virus more than once, then a vaccine may be required to protect many more people - although those who are most seriously ill have a greater immune response than those with mild symptoms.
Other coronaviruses, such as the common cold, do re-infect people so it’s not surprising that Sars-CoV-2 – the virus which causes Covid-19 – could do the same.
But the World Health Organization says it’s important not to jump to any conclusions based on the experience of one patient out of 23 million around the world.
The full research paper has not yet been published so some aspects of this case are not yet clear.
It appears that when this person was infected for the second time they had no symptoms – and the infection was picked up by airport screening tests, suggesting the patient wasn’t unwell. More population-based studies are needed before any firm conclusions on re-infection can be made.

Three jailed on Isle of Man for breaking Covid quarantine rules...
Three people have been jailed this week for failing to quarantine after returning to the Isle of Man from the UK.
Under the island’s strict Covid-19 rules, returning travellers must self-isolate at home for 14 days.
The Isle of Man has recorded no new cases of coronavirus since 20 May, leading the government to dispense with most of its lockdown restrictions in mid-June, before the UK.
But to stop any new cases and defend what it calls its “Manx bubble”, the local authorities are tough on anyone who fails to comply with quarantine measures.
On Monday 64-year-old Paul Dowd received a six-week jail sentence after going to the pub twice when he should have been in quarantine.
And on Tuesday a woman from Northern Ireland was jailed for a month after breaking quarantine rules. Fraser Nolan had been given special permission to visit to take care of her late mother’s estate but was caught by police after travelling by bus to a locksmith.
In the latest case to reach court, Alistair McCormick from Douglas was jailed for four weeks on Saturday after visiting a bank in the town on 21 August when he should have been isolating at home.
The court heard McCormick had spent about 20 minutes in the bank after a cash machine retained his bank card, according to the BBC. He was reported to police after he told a member of staff in the branch he had returned to the island about 10 days ago, having spent three-and-a-half weeks in the UK.
On the same day, he visited an electronics store in Braddan, telling staff his mobile phone had recently been stolen while he was visiting Edinburgh, the hearing at Douglas courthouse was told.
When arrested by police, the company director accepted he had been “out and about” when he should have been self-isolating, but offered no excuse for his actions.
The island’s border reopened to residents on 20 July and government figures show more than 2,500 people returned during the following month. Anyone who breaches the self-isolation rules could face a fine of up to £10,000 or three months in prison.
Sentencing McCormick, the deputy high bailiff, Christopher Arrowsmith, said he had ignored rules put in place to protect people and imprisonment was the only appropriate penalty.

Hong Kong researchers report first documented coronavirus re-infection...
HONG KONG (Reuters) - A Hong Kong man who recovered from COVID-19 was infected again four-and-a-half months later in the first documented instance of human re-infection, researchers at the University of Hong Kong said on Monday.
The findings indicate the disease, which has killed more than 800,000 people worldwide, may continue to spread amongst the global population despite herd immunity, they said.
The 33-year-old male was cleared of COVID-19 and discharged from a hospital in April, but tested positive again after returning from Spain via Britain on Aug. 15.
The patient had appeared to be previously healthy, researchers said in the paper, which was accepted by the international medical journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
He was found to have contracted a different coronavirus strain from the one he had previously contracted and remained asymptomatic for the second infection.

BIB is the important part; it has already been hypothesised by the scientific community that antibody immunity may be temporary, but T-cell immunity may be long lasting (several decades). T-cell immunity means that you can catch the virus again and carry it, but symptoms are likely to be very mild or non-existant.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk ProTrue but if there really is no hope of a lasting vaccine then it becoming less dangerous to humans over time (which is what would happen in 2 or 3 generations) because of resistance is good news. Not necessarily for people right now, but for the human race. If there's no hope of a vaccine, no antibody herd immunity and no T-cell immunity then it would be repeated cycles forever, which would essentially mean that people living much beyond 70 / living at all with long term health conditions just wouldn't happen any more.

It's awful and Hancock should have resigned/been fired long ago, but this particular case feels more like oversight than anything else - aren't you only allowed benefits if you have less than like £10k in savings? Hopefully a loophole will be put in place to cover this.

Read it. The government had a choice whether this would infringe on benefits or not, and they made sure it did.

It would be very easy for doctors to put a cause of death on a medical certificate as coronavirus rather than, say, pneumonia, if they knew that it would get the family compensation.
The government has to be careful of that. Or is it only awarded after a positive test for Covid?

Lasting immunity doubt as two more cases of Covid reinfection confirmed...
Two European patients are confirmed to have been re-infected with the coronavirus, raising questions over how long immunity to the virus lasts.
The cases, in Belgium and the Netherlands, come a day after researchers in Hong Kong revealed that a 33-year-old man was re-infected with a different strain of the virus four and a half months after being declared recovered - the first such re-infection to be determined through genetic sequencing.
The cases have fuelled fears about the effectiveness of potential vaccines against the virus, as it would appear that immunity only lasts a short period of time. However, experts have warned against reading too much into isolated cases - in a pandemic that has infected more than 23 million people.

How many u turns have the government done this year?! Pretty much every decision?
Either schools are safe or they or not. If we are being told schools are safe them why do they need face masks?
....I don’t know if it would be every 3 months or how frequently etc...but it really is going to be a step by step process, I think....every 3 months would be an amazing starting point, for instance, if it gave a much needed immune time...then science could progress to longer lasting immunities in time...?...I mean, it’s just so new and so devastating that we can’t expect to ‘control it’ long term as quickly as we would like to...this is our world now and science is doing a great job, I think...with the steps it’s taking...

Wearing a face covering or face mask in schools or other education settings is not recommended. Face coverings may be beneficial for short periods indoors where there is a risk of close social contact with people you do not usually meet and where social distancing and other measures cannot be maintained, for example on public transport or in some shops. This does not apply to schools or other education settings. Schools and other education or childcare settings should therefore not require staff, children and learners to wear face coverings. Changing habits, cleaning and hygiene are effective measures in controlling the spread of the virus. Face coverings (or any form of medical mask unless instructed to be used for specific clinical reasons) should not be worn in any circumstance by those who may not be able to handle them as directed (for example, young children, or those with special educational needs or disabilities) as it may inadvertently increase the risk of transmission

And yet u turn is what the news is calling it
If they are listening to the experts, why did the experts tell them masks arent recommended in schools or places of education. That students and staff wouldnt be required to wear them. And that masks could increase the risk of transmission in the first place and why have these 'experts' changed their mind
Noone is an expert! How can they be called an expert. Yes they may have some degree that says they are or done some research about it. But the world hasnt gone through this or lived through this pandemic before. So how can they be called an expert???
They are all just making it up as it goes along
We are all screwed and everyone may aswell just get on with their lives as everything put in place seems to get reversed anyways

Well "most" is unlikely because the majority of tests are still on people who think they might have it (and thus, are displaying some symptoms). But yes, a lot of them will be mild symptoms - a basic cough or a random fever that breaks in 48 hours. But there will be a lot more asymptomatic people out there who have no symptoms at all and aren't included in any figures.

Why is this news when loads of disinfectants and other products have been said to kill the virus ??
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk ProI've not read about it but, as a guess, it's because these sprays are usually a sort of "cream" that you spray on and rub into your skin like sun tan lotion. Potentially, if you do that on any exposed skin, it would act like a protective layer and kill any viral particles that land on you.
I would mention though; they taste horrendously bitter (they're designed to stop insects biting). Don't get it on your lips and don't try to eat a sandwich with it on your hands. Yuck.

Coronavirus outbreak at Norfolk chicken factory sees 75 test positive and 350 families enter self-isolation...
A Norfolk chicken factory has partially shut after 75 workers tested positive and hundreds of families entered self-isolation.
A further 39 positive Covid-19 tests were confirmed among the workforce at Banham Poultry in Attleborough on Wednesday after 347 staff were tested.
The county's director of public health, Dr Louise Smith, said it was "now being regarded as a significant national outbreak".
It has sparked fears Norfolk could be the next area of the country to enter local lockdown.
The cutting area of the factory is to close on Thursday morning and staff have been asked to quarantine along with their families.
Dr Smith said: “We are now working with colleagues across the county, regionally and nationally to take specialist advice, including learning from other similar outbreaks in other parts of the UK.
"This will assist us to quickly make decisions on what the next steps will be to prevent further transmission of the virus."
Dr Smith added: "At this stage in our investigation these cases of infection are in staff who work in Banham Poultry and their households."
She said the source of the outbreak has not yet been determined and there were no plans yet for a local lockdown.
At least one factory staff member was taken to hospital but their conditon is not known.
Other areas of the plant - which employs 1,100 people - will remain open for the time being, but Government ministers are set to assess the situation on Thursday.
Norfolk’s Public Health team is working with the management team at Banham Poultry and colleagues at Breckland Council, Public Health England and the Department of Health.

Don’t lick your fingers!
That’s what Kentucky Fried Chicken signaled to customers Monday as the company suspended its “It’s Finger Lickin’ Good” tagline after 64 years, deeming it “the most inappropriate slogan for 2020” amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The suspension will affect the slogan’s use in global advertising “for a little while,” the company said in a statement.
“We find ourselves in a unique situation — having an iconic slogan that doesn’t quite fit in the current environment,” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, the company’s global chief marketing officer.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s coronavirus safety measures calls for people to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands to reduce exposure to the virus.
For now, the company, which is a subsidiary of Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum! Brands, is telling fans not to worry.
“The slogan will be back,” the statement said. “Just when the time is right.”

That Telegraph article is in part misleading.
I have the feeling Companies, have seen how productive working from home can still be.
It may be they don't want to go back to the large office environments.
Especially those in bigger buildings.
Thinking of electric bills plus the cost of being in the premises.
It may be some companies start to look at smaller office environments, where few need to be there all the time.
This is hitting other businesses as to takeaway and sandwich/ snack places.
Business will in the end, do as business wants.
Especially the stronger businesses.
If they can save much more having staff work effectively from home.
Less travelling expenses for staff too.
This may end up becoming a new norm as to office working.
The government can whine on and try to tell workers to return to offices.
However, even the government's advice is, it's up to the employers.
So really then it's a kind of lip service response again from the government to the worries of other businesses in cities, relying on large groups of office workers.
This may never get back to how things were before.
These kind of threats of get back to work or lose your job, during this still very uncertain pandemic.
Are frankly despicable.
Wherever those threats arise from.
We need again still, full openness and clear advice, not this mixing of advice then tinged with unnecessary ugly threats.
provided public transport is safe and employers are providing a covid safe working environment, the government has to encourage employees back to the work place. If they didn't, they would be criticised for letting local service businesses crash and burn. Ultimately, its for employers and staff to agree the best approach for them and market forces will apply to the local services. There is no escaping that

Modelling by the Office for National Statistics estimates there are 2,200 new infections per day.
Following a low point in June in the percentage of people testing positive for the virus, there was a small increase in July.
This is staying stable for the week ending 20 August, the ONS says.

We were going to get my eldest tested as she has a sore throat. It's not technically necessary as it's not one of the "get tested" symptoms on its own - no cough/temp or any other symptoms but we thought we might as well... but didn't because it's such a long round trip for a test. But one of her classmates had the same (along with a cough) last week and was tested nearby. The testing centre has disappeared literally over the weekend .
Her friend tested negative anyway and half of her class has come down with the sniffles/scratchy throat now so it's obviously some other random bug. But still. Just odd that it seems to have closed.

A leaked government report suggests a "reasonable worst case scenario" of 85,000 deaths across the UK this winter due to Covid-19.
The document also says while more restrictions could be re-introduced, schools would likely remain open.
But it says the report "is a scenario, not a prediction" and the data are subject to "significant uncertainty".
However some are critical of the modelling and say some of it is already out of date.
The document, which has been seen by BBC Newsnight, was prepared for the government by the Sage scientific advisory group, which aims to help the NHS and local authorities plan services, such as mortuaries and burial services, for the winter months ahead.
Among its key assumptions are that schools will remain open and that the government's tracing, isolation, and quarantine measures will only be 40% effective in cutting the spread of Covid outside households.
It also states that by November "policy measures would be put in place to reduce non-household contacts to half of their normal pre March 2020 levels". In other words, restrictions to mitigate the impact - other than school closures - could be put in place.
According to the report these measures might be expected to remain in place until March 2021.
The model attempts to calculate excess deaths in England and Wales between July 2020 to March 2021. These are deaths over and above what would normally be expected during that period and are based on ONS data.
The model has been adjusted to account for people who would have been expected to die because they have other illnesses.
It said in England and Wales there could be 81,000 excess deaths due to Covid, plus 27,000 excess deaths from non-Covid causes.
In Scotland there could be 2,600 direct Covid deaths, and 1,900 in Northern Ireland.
In addition to excess deaths, the model also suggests how many people may need hospital treatment between November and March, including intensive care.
The figures, which the scientists say have a wide range of uncertainty, suggest around 2.4% of infected people could be hospitalised (range: 0.0%-8.9%) with 20.5% of hospitalised patients going into ICU (range: 1.5% - 35.25) and 23.3% (range: 1.2% - 43.3%) of all hospitalised patients dying.
The model also predicts an overall infection fatality ratio of 0.7% (0.0% - 9.7%).

My cynical side here again.
They expect so many more deaths.
Leaking this, if the figures of losses, are well under 80,000 this winter period.
They can claim they averted larger losses.
Doesn't sound much like having any really effective planning even in light of this document.
I'm sorry, I'm now nothing other than suspicious of whatever comes from this government and its SAGE advice too sadly.
I wouldn't myself trust much of anything they say.
That's my opinion, sorry.
I wish, I really wish I could have a different view.
Too much deceit all through has eroded any chance of trust now at all.

Face masks in schools: Boris Johnson performs U-turn on advice...
https://news.sky.com/story/face-masks-in-schools-boris-johnson-performs-u-turn-on-advice-12056671
...just going back to clarify the U-Turn...I think it’s less of a U-Turn and more of a ‘tweak’...It’s not to help ‘prevent’ as such, it’s only areas where a lockdown has already been placed again...horse already bolted/something/something etc..
‘But on Tuesday evening, the DfE decided face coverings would be mandatory in communal areas of secondary schools where social distancing was difficult from 1 September.
This is only for secondary schools in regions where lockdowns are in place due to higher coronavirus transmission.
As of Tuesday evening, these areas were Greater Manchester, Lancashire and West Yorkshire, Leicester, Luton and Northampton.
The rules do not include classrooms and it does not affect primary school pupils.
In parts of the country that do not have higher transmission, headteachers will be left to decide whether face coverings are needed.’

Well if he liked her and the Supremes, at least he has a good taste in music.
Of course it can't be hurried to find a vaccine.
It's a bit like stating the obvious.
It needs to be the right one, effective and really safe too.

i think it's going to be a very grim winter for every country. I wouldn't go planning any special Christmas/New Year festivitiesTbh I doubt it'll peak higher than the first wave though, simply because we're forewarned whereas people (governments) didn't take it as seriously the first time round.
I certainly wouldn't book any trips away though, or be planning any new years parties.
NYE is better at home with family, hot chocolate and a bag of doritos anyway :hee:

I don't know anyone who had a positive test but I know a few people who were ill at the height of the pandemic with symptoms but it was when they weren't testing unless you were admitted to hospital..
I also know someone who got contacted through test and trace and has to isolate even though they have no symptoms.
Jake.

Thank you Joey, she’s fine now thankfully. Was no doubt scary at the time, what with her having two young children too

Piers Corbyn is apparently the 73 year-old fined £10,000 for organising the Trafalgar Square protest.
