There was an interesting segment on the London news last night, scientists from Imperial College have been swabbing the underground and buses key traffic areas after rush hour, bells on buses, hand rails, escalators, tickets barriers, etc have returned no virus evident for two months in a row so cleaning regimes seem to be working :clap1: keep those masks on

...so many empty shelves at the supermarket yesterday, it really was quite sad...I only went for a few bits so I did get everything...but there was a lady there who had also gone for just a few bits and she couldn’t get any of them....she was tearful......

It’s only a day or so ago we were being told by the supermarkets ( I think ) that there were plenty of stock available..

Are they also lying to us now !?

well there would be plenty stock if people shopped normally, if someone goes in and buys 10 bags of pasta that is not normal and no warehouse could keep up with that demand

Coronavirus: Boris Johnson warns of deaths 'on a grievous scale' without England lockdown...

Boris Johnson has warned of deaths "on a grievous scale" without further action to stem the spread of coronavirus infections.

As he opened a House of Commons debate on England's new lockdown, the prime minister urged MPs to vote in favour of a second national shutdown later on Wednesday.

Mr Johnson said he was "not prepared to take the risk with the lives of the British people" after being confronted with worsening COVID-19 data.

The prime minister added, without action now, the NHS was likely to be in "extraordinary trouble" by next month.

My baby henry is 7 months old today. That shows how long this whole thing has gone on for. Still the family havent been able to hold him properly. From being born to now eating solids, starting to crawl even starting to babble his words. They still havent been able to have that time to bond with him. There seems to be no time frame to it either. How old is he gonna be when this is gone?

Sadly
it is wrong to take some out of that care home
without agreement.

As they Drove off
the Care home informed them they notified the Police.

At least she is Free from the Police now
as she was on This Morning.

But far worse for the 97 year old
as she will be alone for 14 days
back in the care home.

it is a tragic scenario, but i could see how it could happen. If the care home just let someone drive off without completing appropriate documentation, they would be held responsible. An awful lot is not explained in that video

I mean that is true as well, I don't know how they got access to her, or why they didn't advise what they wanted to do and do it through the proper channels, I think maybe they just got frustrated and acted on an instinct, it must be a nightmare to have a relative in a care home at the moment

I guarantee you I am safer at home than college. In college I have to be in a room no larger than my kitchen with 15 other people, no masks, no PPE. The other option is virtual learning (which we did for most of last year and worked perfectly) where I can be protected from the virus myself and my vulnerable household.

The government has been criticised by the official statistics watchdog for the way it presented data to justify England's second lockdown.

The UK Statistics Authority highlighted the use of modelling at Saturday's TV briefing showing the possible death toll from Covid this winter.

It said there needed to be more transparency about data and how predictions were being made.

The projections were out of date and over-estimated deaths, it has emerged.

we have such a long winter ahead, there is the possibility of things being much worse if it were allowed to get out of control. In March the R rate was 3 across the UK. Now ( or last week, it was 1.1-1.3) So not even close to how it was in March, and it shows social distancing is working. All we need to do is bring the number under 1 and the infections will shrink again. As we only need to come down from 1.1-1.3 it will be much easier than coming down from 3 in March.

The bottom line is we all just need to be careful with social distancing

All we need to do is bring the number under 1 and the infections will shrink again. As we only need to come down from 1.1-1.3 it will be much easier than coming down from 3 in March.

The bottom line is we all just need to be careful with social distancing

Yes, the r rate is so much lower than it was back march.
At the moment it's around 1.5.
So I'm confident that we can do it.
But they will need to reopen carefully and not too fast.

He mentioned that England would be going back to the tiered restrictions though so the areas with the highest numbers will probably still be in a lockdown

Yes he did, I'm glad he said that too.

Obviously I'd support that, sadly too I can see the run up to Christmas and New Year having big problems in England however much I hope not.

Yeah, there will be a tiered system afterwards.
That's probably the best way to keep cases as low as possible.

There a lot of retired people who buy at auction and supplement their state pension buy selling at fairs, booties and have buy-it-now stalls at antiques centres and auction houses. When we locked-down their income stopped and they got no help. I am sure that is replicated widely in other spheres. Even if they do declare it to the taxman the help form the govt would have been useless as they rely on a weekly income and not a fraction of earnings 2wice in 6 months.

But in general imagine Mr Brown who needs to buy a torch and say some screws. Normally he nips down to the local hardware store. In lockdown all he can now do is buy it from the richest man in the world (amazon)

It only affects people who have recently become self employed and they can literally be any profession, small ebay shops, wedding photographers etc, its very difficult to under report profits unless you get paid cash which hardly anyone does these days, surprised at your attitude tbh, there are people in dire situations out there, its not really a laughing matter imo

School say they are testing positive then each time we get an email from public health england to say he is a close contact of a positive case. You referred to ‘tradies’ construction is open as it was back in first lockdown, the only difference is this time trades people can come to your house, so no ‘tradies’ will be claiming as their jobs have not closed, and what can be claimed as profits are capped so they are not earning 80 per of profit at all?

And the idea that people can claim cash in the bank is a gambling win is the stuff of fantasy, you have to account for all income, however you came by it with actual proof

France has recorded 60,486 coronavirus cases in one day, its highest one-day total since the pandemic began.

The new figures bring the number of confirmed cases in the country to 1.7 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

A further 828 deaths were confirmed on Friday. Almost 40,000 people have now died from the virus in the country.

France is one week into a second lockdown with the aim of curbing the spread of the virus.

Experts say peak of second wave 'has already PASSED': Scientists further undermine need for national lockdown as study finds R rate is 1 and cases are falling in the North and Scotland

The second wave of coronavirus ripping through the UK has already peaked, top scientists have suggested after Downing Street rejected calls to end or cut short England's national lockdown insisting it will run for 26 more days.

One scientist said there were 'positive signs' the peak of the second wave had passed, while another praised the Tiered system saying it had driven the virus 'down' in 'Tier Three areas like Liverpool'. A third added that the latest data indicated the second wave had 'stabalised'.

A swathe of data published yesterday revealed Covid-19 infection rates were already falling across the country before ministers lost their nerve and ordered the shutters to be pulled down again.

Agree, literally nothing seems to have changed here other than restaurants closing. We haven't been able to mix households since August (although lots have), the roads are just as busy as they have been and infections are dropping across most GM boroughs (probably because of the local restrictions). I think essentially, closing non-essential retail has been proven not to be necessary, even in winter conditions, so long as people stick with other Tier 3 measures. The restrictions imposed across the Scottish central belt early on appear to have worked well without needing to go further. They could have been imposed a little earlier, even (as soon as there was an indication of rising cases) and would have been even more effective.

it all boils down to people social distancing, if they did that, there wouldn't need to be any restrictions. Simply put, the tier system and then lockdown applies incrementally more psychological pressure to comply. In Scotland people have taken notice at an earlier pressure level and is seeing the benefits.

Are people inherently worse or better at social distancing depending on location/country? I don't think so tbh, I think there's wider factors at play

There was an expert on Sky about two hours ago giving his take on the vaccine.. he was more cautious than the headlines .. I’m sure he mentioned something about the vaccine was only tested on 97 people and only a week ago so toon soon to come to any reliable conclusions.. the interviewer definitely said “it seems like a very small number to base a conclusion on”

Honestly I think this is reckless reporting; we have no idea how effective this or any other vaccine will be until its actually in meaningful use.

Its cause for cautious optimism but as usual the press go to 1000% straight away and announce "everything normal by spring!!"... Which frankly is extremely unlikely.

Its especially reckless because now you'll have a nice new chunk of people getting sloppy with taking precautions "because it's cured now!" :idc:

there are many questions not answered like how effective it is on elderly people or if it even suitable for their use. How long does it provide immunity for. These are very important unanswered questions.

The good news is that there are a whole load of vaccines progressing through testing and these will be reaching the same stage over the coming weeks, but saying people will start to be immunised by christmas is bringing false hope to people. It will all help come next winter, but wont have any effect before April

They just need to make sure it's safe before rolling it out.It appears to be 90% effective in trials. They have no idea how effective it is in mass use, nor how long protection lasts.

Like I said, cause for cautious optimism but it's being hailed as a eureka "it's all over" moment and that's just not realistic. Life will not be anything close to back to normal by spring. Maybe spring 2022 in time for my ML win? But not spring 2021.

I agree with TS as to cautious optimism.

It is signs of a major probable breakthrough so very welcome.

I'm afraid however, I wouldn't trust a word that comes from Hancock's mouth.

Yes however, let us hope this will be one of, if not 'the' breakthrough needed in this virus.

Massive credit and all hopeful wishes to the scientists working round the clock to find some effective way of dealing with this vile virus.

Fingers crossed but still with caution for me until more time has passed to learn much more from the results of the trials of this vaccine

The 94 number refers to the number that went on to get covid after vaccination

So,

44000 were in the trial

22000 got a placebo, of this group 94 went on to catch Covid.

22000 got the real vaccine, of this group 5 went on to catch Covid.

This is how they arrive at the figure of 90% effective.

It's a very good sign and I think it's evident that the protection is good. I think it would take a larger study to accurately show a true %age, though, as that 90% alters significantly if even, say, 7 or 8 of group 2 had got it. I think it's fairly certain that it's well above 75% though.

On the face of it ... it does look promising but don’t they usually take 7 years from start to finish to get a NEW drug on the market !!?

How on earth can they know or even estimate any LONG TERM side effects ?

Were the 97 from the two groups? they didn’t specify as all went about their daily lives

They had to do it "naturally" (i.e. have a vaccinated group and a control group and then just let them go about their normal business and see what happened) for ethical reasons in this case because of Covid being potentially fatal.

There would be MUCH more robust data if you could deliberately expose all 44000 participants to Covid and see how many vaccinated individuals were infected vs the unvaccinated control group.

But yeah... there would be over 100 deaths in a best-case-scenario* there so for obvious reasons, we can't do it that way.

*(Best case scenario being all of the vaccinated group being immune, and about 3/4 of the unvaccinated group being infected, so around 15000 total cases)

Some live-in maids in Spain have been forbidden from leaving their employers houses during the coronavirus pandemic.

The union that represents them has heard from around 100 women who say they have been kept locked inside for months. It says that live-in maids were already often being treated like “modern-day slaves” in the country and that lockdown has made things worse.

Domestic workers are more at risk of being exploited and abused, as they don’t have the same legal rights as other workers.

At least 22,000 have been fired since the start of the pandemic, according to the Spanish government.

Europe correspondent Jean Mackenzie has spoken to live-in maids about their experiences. Two of them, who we call Isabella and Maria, have had their names changed to protect their identity.

This report was filmed during a local easing of Covid-19 rules.
