Enjoy your 4 Large Corn Beef slices for a pound, Madame.

That's what they lived on during the war Arista! I'm sure you remember it well.

But are they trying to make out that this is an example of panic buying? That looks like a relatively normal xmas trolley tbh.

Went out to the Simply food at the petrol station as TS spooked me that I would get no brussels, all very quiet on the roads, swing into the carpark at Sains it was busy but not overly so, and no queue to get into the carpark or the shop the guys they hired for car park control were in a huddle chatting,

Here's a (non-expert) theory.

Don't the lockdowns encourage new strains to evolve that spread more easily? Through the rules of natural selection: the more easily-transmitted versions of the virus are the ones that are passed on while the less-transmittable strains are suppressed.

that is certainly true for the pfizer and moderna vaccines. Their vaccine is based on producing anti bodies against the coronavirus spike which is what it uses to enter human cells, and that is still present in the new variant

So yes lockdowns would kill off the less easily spread strains more easily, but that wouldn't have any effect on the numbers of the other strains.

yes they would, if someone is infected with one strain of covid, it's unlikely they would be infected by another, so the fast moving virus gobbles up the majority of hosts and the slow moving virus has nowhere to go

There is no evidence the current vaccine won’t work, no additional doses requiredI think it's pretty much confirmed (sine it's been sequenced) that the new strain isnt different enough to the original to make the vaccine any less effective. It's just that to achieve herd immunity, the more easily it spreads, the higher a proportion need to be immune to drive it down. Herd immunity isn't necessarily THAT important though if vulnerable groups can be effectively vaccinated. The group it does pose problems for is immune-suppressed people who can't have the vaccine.

These lorry drivers have been in and out of the UK all through the pandemic and will be very aware of how to keep themselves safe , to deny them access back home days before Christmas is a horrible act of political posturing on Macrons behalf, on top of that he is trapping UK drivers in France so it’s not really ideal from a PH point of view

In theory it could increase case numbers for that area by 50%, more even, depending on how many they're doing. If they were testing literally everyone it could double them. Especially if they're testing under-30's who have a very high likelihood of being asymptomatic or having very minor symptoms that may not even have flagged as a concern.

You just turn up, so anyone can have a test, as long as you have no symptoms, they tested 500.00 on Saturday, they really need to split the numbers as to those with symptoms testing positive and those without, or at least clarify if these numbers are feeding into the daily totals

It may seem commendable to work that way but it really isn't. Especially in a pandemic you need rest or you'll get run down and more susceptible to all kinds of nasties.

We are in a similar position Vanessa where you are asked to work flat out to cover, these are big companies...they won't fall apart if you take your well deserved time off :)

We all refused after covering hella amounts of shifts this year and they got agency guards in, they cost a bit more that's why they don't like using them.

It's not worth getting stressed or ill over, favours only ever seem to go one way too :/

Yes, they are very stressed out.
I hope they get some time off soon, they need it.

Germany's christmas corona rules

What are the contact restrictions right now?

Until at least January 10th 2021, private meetings indoors and outdoors are only allowed with members of your own household and one other household, with a maximum of five people over the age of 14; younger children are exempt from the rule.

What's changing at Christmas?

For the period from December 24th to 26th, the government and states have agreed to allow a slight relaxation of this rule.

"Even in this special year, it should be possible for the Christmas days to be celebrated together. However, in view of the high incidence of infection, this will only be possible on a much smaller scale than usual," said the German government and 16 states in a final decision paper.

Here's what is allowed:

1. Your household can invite or gather with four people over the age of 14 during this time

2. Children under the age of 14 are not counted in the total number of people.

3. Only meetings within the closest family circle are allowed. However, because this is difficult to define formally, the politicians have specifically named various groups of people. They mention "spouses, partners and partners in a non-marital partnership as well as relatives in a straight line, siblings, siblings' children and their respective household members".

4. The policy appeals to everyone to take a "protection week" before meetings. That means that people should cut down social contact as much as possible for five to seven days before celebrating with people.

Examples:

- So an older couple can celebrate with two adult children, their partners and all grandchildren under 14 (household plus four).

- Note the rule only extends to relatives in a "straight line". An elderly couple with one adult child would therefore not be allowed to invite uncles and aunts in addition to their family (household plus two), even if the number of four adult guests is not reached.

- If the couple has three adult children with their own family (household plus six), one of the adult children would have to celebrate elsewhere.

- The situation is different if one of the three children is older but still lives at home. Then it counts as part of the parents' household (household plus four).

What happens if you are not celebrating with family?

Then the current rule applies: no more than two households in total can meet with a maximum of five people. Children under 14 are exempt from the rule.

Was this one of the topics thoroughly discussed?

Most likely. The examples show how difficult it was for Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders to find a solution for Christmas.

Not all sides are happy with the wording announced either. According to a transcript from the meeting participants, the point "does not make the intention sufficiently clear", reported Spiegel.

Previously, the government and states were to allow a maximum of 10 people to meet from any number of households between December 23rd and 31st, but this does not apply anymore.

The paper also contains an important restriction: the Christmas rule only applies "depending on the respective infection situation" in the state.

Should the situation escalate further, individual state governments can switch to stricter contact restrictions during the holidays.

Can you travel to visit people?

Travel is not banned, but a further appeal is being made to the public to refrain from non-essential domestic and international travel. The quarantine rule for arrivals from foreign risk areas remains in place.

What about state differences?

As we said earlier, states can choose to enforce different rules depending on the Covid-19 situation.

Keep an eye on your local government decisions for any state differences.

Nicky91
23-12-2020, 02:57 PM
"protection week" means creating a 'bubble' yourself, if anyone there got plans to have family over for christmas

+ selftestkits which is also very useful, to test yourself, make sure the ones who come over also get themselves tested etc

those government and state council meetings over there have been going on like marathons daily, but finally they also come to some agreements now

Bet they ‘keep’ the daily infection rate under 40,000 for as long as they can then there’ll be a computer glitch and we’ll get a crazy high number one day when
can’t hide the truth any longer .

Japan, South Korea also going up in terms of new cases, some bit of cause to be on high alert but its not that high

Japan: just over 3.100 new cases

South Korea: slightly over 1.100 new cases

a record daily amount for them, so yeah it is good they are paying close attention to this, likely some stricter measures to come there, good to see they are on high alert even with ''low numbers'' compared to back with us in western countries

From BBC:
[Three things are coming together that
mean the new variant is attracting attention:

It is rapidly replacing other versions of the virus
It has mutations that affect part of the virus likely to be important
Some of those mutations have already been shown
in the lab to increase the ability of the virus to infect cells.

All of these build a case for a virus that can spread more easily,

Personally I think do the job the right way, I presume in the trials the second shot was given 3 weeks after the first, so tinkering with that would be madness as there is no data on delaying the second jab?

no, there were examples where that occured but that could be explained by the group it was given to were also all younger. The data states 60-90% ... that is the factual result, and as such, I won't be taking it when there is a vaccine that offers 95% protection without caveat.

Doesn't work like that; yes one dose of a vaccine can give some protection, but if you miss the "window" for the second dose you have to start over... you can't just "worry about it later" and take it whenever. I guess they might mean give one dose to bring down case numbers and then totally restart with "proper" vaccination later, but that would be a massive waste of MILLIONS of doses which seems utterly immoral given that there are many countries out there that aren't going to be able to vaccinate at all.

I agree....the main thing being they need to keep schools closed this time for a couple of weeks considering they have found out this spreads even easier in children. Its not ideal but given we are so close with the vaccines now, they need to just keep us in like in March for a couple of weeks to really give it time to drive the infections down again then the immunisation programme can ne most effective

No travel between counties, non-essential retail closed (thankfully no dumb **** like taping off areas of supermarkets), work from home, and schools closed until the 18th at least(I thi k into February is more likely).
