West Yorkshire's tier 3 from Monday, so what's the plan when the whole country is tier 3 as it looks like it's going to end up that way soon.

go for a even stricter lockdown than at the first wave
that is another possibility (cause you can't go back to the same lockdown, so if you guys need another one, it needs to be a lot stricter)
and that might be like, only leave your home with a form (paperwork) only for crucial things such as grocery shopping, pharmacy, doctor but other than that no one out on streets who got no specific reason of doing so
that will put an end to illegal partying
and to fight off loneliness, create your own ''socializing bubble'' with family who live with you, socialize at home with them, perhaps a time to dust off old board games, or watch shows on tv together
those who live alone, very much a helpful advice to use facetime, skype maybe 3 or 4 days a week, frequent phone calls with relatives, friends whom you got phone numbers of
#StayHome and lemme use our slogan (translating into english for this forum) #OnlyTogetherWeCanBeatCorona
its quite possible that most regions may get to t 3 at some point, but by staggering when they come in and out of it, we stand a chance of keeping the economy going rather than places closing that don't need to
We have 5 months of this to get through yet, we cannot remain shut for 5 months without being bankrupt

I don't understand what you mean by staggering when we come in and out of it, we don't get to choose when we come in and out of it the virus does?
The only places that are not going to be severely impacted are semi rural areas, how are they meant to support the economy?

not everyone is going in to t3 at the same time .... the time they are in t3 will depend on how quick they get the numbers under control, so regions are staggered in their timing in t3. They are not all going to come out of t3 on March 31st

Coronavirus: Second wave death toll set to exceed worst-case scenario, Sage warns...
https://uk.yahoo.com/news/coronavirus-second-wave-death-toll-155246950.html
here is the cheery report ....
Covid is spreading "significantly" faster through England than even the government's predicted "worst-case" scenario, documents reveal.
The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage) says there are around four times as many people catching Covid than anticipated.
A "reasonable worst-case scenario" is used by officials and the NHS to plan for the months ahead.
It had estimated 85,000 deaths from Covid over the course of winter.
But an official Sage document, dated 14 October and published today, reveals we are in a worse position than expected.
Scientists crunching the numbers estimated that, by mid-October, there were between 43,000 and 74,000 people being infected with coronavirus every day in England.
Their report said: "This is significantly above the profile of the reasonable worst-case scenario, where the number of daily infections in England remained between 12,000-13,000 throughout October."
It added that the number of people with Covid needing hospital care is already higher than the winter plan and deaths will "almost certainly" exceed the plan in the next two weeks.
Just watching Sky News showing the horrific scenes in Nottingham centre last night where thousands congregated drinking and dancing .. some were even shown going behind the police then knocking their hats off and scarpering .
All faces clear to see not a mask to be seen
We’re doomed .

mark drakeford has given up on any subtlety or nuanced approach and said no more local lockdowns , just total wales lockdowns. His reasoning to avoid any confusion. But Cardiffs rate is 15 times that of cardigan per person, as it has been before , surely he needs to treat the 2 places differently doesnt he?
1
even if we factor in cardiffs population is about 6 times the size at 478,000 and ceredigion is only 75000
The cardiff rate is still 15 times per person greater than ceredigion
Yet drakeford is treating both areas the same? seems a bit draconian and plain daft

whats the latest on ventilators? do we have enough
A few months ago I seem to recall the talk was all about not needing ventilation for most cases ... wasn’t there some development in a machine that simply got more oxygen into the system thereby nullifying the need for ventilation ??
It’s all gone quiet on that front for some reason

very odd , they talk a subject to death a few months ago as you say and now no one mentions it?
also why has no journalist ever asked about shutting down the channel tunnel for all but essential emergencies?
we have loads of ventilators and they are indeed not needed as much because of more refined treatment methods. We should also remember that hospitals always fill up in winter with respiratory disease

Fetzer used rainfall to try to estimate whether the increase was caused by the programme. He found that in areas that had a lot of rain during lunch and dinner hours on Mondays to Wednesday that month, fewer people ate out and fewer people were infected. The same pattern was not visible if it rained on other days of the week, suggesting that the scheme itself was directly responsible for the increase in infections.
An estimate based solely on rainfall :umm2:

Christmas is overrated, basically one day of nonsense.
While some are still ignoring the guidelines, the vast majority are complying. What this implies to me is that the virus remains airborne for a while so that the social distancing of 2 metres is less effective. If the virus remains airborne for say 15 or even 30 mins then you could catch it by walking in to an infected "pocket" even if you do stick to the 2 metre distancing. Something like this must be happening for the rate to be increasing as it is.

Doesn’t the science say you have to be in the presence of someone for 15 minutes. This is being spread indoors in homes and businesses like the one above who are flouting the law ..150 people smoking shisha? ..how many businesses are going undetected

corona is only deadly to old people, so still a lot of panic over nothing
lockdowns aren't necessary if you see ICU's still can handle it, what my country's health minister De Jonge said, hence why we are not going for another lockdown yet
tbh ICU's are the more serious cases so if you see that one is flattening down in daily numbers that is good
i think our government should be flexible enough to alter its plans where necessary to do whats best for the country. I don't care if it branded a u turn or whatever. If the spread of the virus means that a broader system becomes appropriate then do it.
There is only one message anyway whatever restrictions are in place .... social distance, hardly difficult to understand

...no the social distance or ‘space’ part of the slogan isn’t difficult to understand...but it can be difficult to maintain and practice in supermarkets for instance...in ours anyway, the space was maintained through restricted number of people in store at one time...?..but now with mask wearing, the restricted number is no longer applied...and in a busy supermarket, maintaining space is becoming more and more difficult...

This isn't March-April, they know the physical properties of the virus and how it spreads fairly robustly at this point. It isn't secretly airborne.
Also, Scotland's numbers are levelling off whilst England's continue to increase which means, essentially, that the Scottish central belt restrictions had a significant effect on the spread.

I know that there is a massive worry about the NHS but it seems like this lockdown is another knee jerk. Surely we will not have seen full results yet of the Tier systems yet. The R rate is dropping again and so surely case numbers will follow suit and anyone who is now infected will end up in hospital whether we are locked down or not. We don't seem to be giving anything a chance to see if its working

Universities is the craziest one, and was done to protect landlords. Eat out to help out responsible for 1/5 of the spike according to studies, shaming people back into offices whilst cutting financial support. All crazy decsions taken as a reaction rather than working with the scientists.
12b on serco track and trace that isn't working, as medical professionals have been replaced by regular folks so serco can increase profits. Cronyism is killing people.

I'm not much of a technology person, but why is track and trace a)so expensive and b)such a failure?
Like, surely everything needed to make it work -location tracking and/or check-ins, the ability to "update status" of covid, and cross-referencing these- already exists? Why is it so hard to string them together? Surely someone taking a computing or coding course at university could make something workable for a fraction of the cost... Or heck, give those billions to a (/group of) student(/s) if it gets the job done. It'd certainly make more of a difference than flushing it away into some faceless company.
But like I side, I'm not a computer person. ICT is something you get from Costa.

No since in Germany they went into lockdown again (because of really bad regional outbreaks, and if you don't act quickly it will turn out for the worse)
but schools and day care centres remain open under strict mask requirement rules, if they do not obey these rules, they must still close

Because they took it away from the nhs, who already ran successful track and trace schemes before covid existed, and gave it to a private company who see it as a way to make money rather than do the service it was intended to do. On top of that, they put friends in charge (dido harding - husband of tory minister), rather than experts, just like everything else this gov does.

Indeed - it was originally the case that T&T managers were to be band 6 NHS nurses at minimum. Obviously not manning every phone, but running the service. When it was handed out to contractors though, instead it has been kids in their late teens and early 20's hired based on call centre experience and not trained in the slightest to handle the challenges presented by track and trace. Also paid half the wage of course, as an experienced band 6 nurse will be on £40k.

I think he planned to anyway. I think a short stint as PM and "getting bwexit dun" was going to be the cherry on top of his political career and he would have semi-retired to the back benches/journalism. That was his plan for 2020.
Then SURPRIIIISE!! Covid time. :hehe:

There were definitely whispers about this from just after the election. He definitely won't want to be PM when food/medicine shortages potentially hit, and nothing is getting through customs as Kent is one big lorry park. I think he saw it as the perfect opportunity to walk off as the hero that delivered it. not be accountable for the impending clusterfcuk.

So Far
on Monday
it could be Scotland
as well in the National 4 week Lockdown
From what I'm hearing today, the numbers in Scotland wouldn't necessarily require lockdown, however if Westminster is only going to fund support packages at this time, Scotland won't have the option of doing it later so might have to go ahead at the same time. This is because HMRC etc is Westminster based and the transition of Social Security (benefits) to Scotland is in process but far from complete (Universal Credit still handled centrally in England). Financially complicated and yet another example of why independence or at least full devolution is the only sensible option for Scotland in the 21st century.

Exactly, and on top of that people who are actually following the guidelines will throw caution to the wind in December if lockdown is the answer, may as well have a good time eh

Obviously people are responsible for their own actions, but you must see that the tide turned with doms eye test and the way the tories protected him, then the gov scrapped shielding which then allowed employers to force the vulnerable back into work, then we had pint with a pie, eat out to help out, Boris shaming people back into workspaces etc.
One of the biggest rises in hospitalisations at the moment are 17-40 yr old women, who are massively represented in the hospitality industry.

Yes of course I can, however the tide was turning even before Doms eye test, look at Europe they don’t have Dom to blame or eat out, if they were the only factors the UK would be the only European country to be struggling, eat out ended in August two months ago infection should have peaked 3rd week of September, if you end up hospitalised 3 weeks after getting infected? I dont know any office workers that went back to work full time, do you? The pubs in the Republic opened in September and closed two weeks later, was the virus circulating in empty pubs?
I didn’t agree with shielding being scrapped btw

If asymptomatic spreading wasn't a thing, and the government wasn't ignoring the advice from scientists then yeah, you may have a point.
As soon as dom happened we went from stay home, to stay alert instantly. Before the rules changed the gov were constantly leaking potential end dates of lockdown to journalists which gave people the confidence that life was coming back. Nothing happens in a vacuum.
Sage have been warning the gov this was about to happen, and the initial lockdown was supposed to buy us time to get t&t working and get an action plan in place. Boris went on another holiday then has been hiding again ever since. Sage wanted the circuit breaker in Sep, the gov knew better.

Asymptomatic should not be an issue if people social distance, treat everyone as riddled  Track and trace is a joke and Dido Harding should be sacked, but there is a stat that just 17 per cent of people isolated for the full 14 days when contacted anyway, We can talk about how poorly the government have dealt with this, but the real losers are families who have lost loved one too soon, and the general public when businesses go under left right and centre

our measures are working well
I think our level 3 (in the 5 level 0 - 4 tier system) has proven to be a good compromise for most well-populated areas, with level 2 working well in rural areas. Fairly robust measures but not full lockdown. Central belt (3/4 of the entire population) has been on Level 3 for a while and rates seem to be coming down well, suggesting that it's a good middle ground .

I agree here, however we know people are lemmings that follow leaders. That's not meant to disparage anyone, it's just how we are as a species. Even the isolation policies weren't enforced. Take farage, he went over to the us during their first wave, then he came back here and a couple of days later was back on TV being interviewed about chasing refugees across the channel.

I agree that comparisons aren't good examples when it comes to a pandemic, but I only used them to show we don't actually do this in any other area of life.
I disagree about the tories point though, because they've demonstrated over and over again their unwillingness to actually follow independent advice, and instead they've used the pandemic as an excuse to give money to their friends, which shows their focus has been on completely the wrong things.
I say this with vulnerable people in my family. I planned to go and spend a few days with my folks a couple of weeks ago, so I isolated to make sure I was clear as my ma will die if she gets it (COPD). As it turned out they had stuff they needed to do so I ended up isolating for 2 weeks, just to go and have lunch with them.
I'm fortunate that I was able to do that in the first place, but when impositions are being put on peoples lives, there is a need to mandate things, because I'd wager most people will subscribe to the "just this once won't hurt" practice, then once they were safe that once, the floodgates are open.

Agree with you Josy, I think people want a solution handed to them, but are ignoring the fact that the solution is in their own hands, some people just won’t give up their freedoms, and that’s fine but this is where following that train of thought ends ...lockdown for everyone

In all honestly I believe leaders of all the countries are in a no win situation during this pandemic, if they lockdown, give guidelines to follow, hand out fines threaten harsher punishment etc then they are accused of ruining the economy and infringing on human rights if they dont do the stuff mentioned above they are accused of not caring and putting people at risk of dying.
That's fair even though I mostly disagree. I do think that a bit of a myth has popped up about economy versus people though, as though they aren't now and won't forever be inextricably linked.
Teaching union calls for schools to close
The National Education Union (NEU) has called for schools and colleges to be included in any lockdown.
The Union says schools should only remain open to vulnerable children and those of key workers during such a general closure period. Boris Johnson is expected to say that schools, universities and colleges should remain open in a four-week lockdown.
Kevin Courtney, the joint general secretary of the NEU, said:
It is clear from ONS data that schools are an engine for virus transmission. It would be self-defeating for the government to impose a national lockdown, whilst ignoring the role of schools as a major contributor to the spread of the virus.
Such a lockdown would impose pain on the whole community - but not be as effective as it could be if schools were included. Ignoring the role of schools and colleges in the spread of the virus is likely to lead to the need for even longer lockdowns in future.
The latest figures from the ONS estimate that 1% of primary pupils and 2% of secondary pupils have the virus and that these levels have increased dramatically since wider opening in September. NEU analysis of ONS figures shows that virus levels are now 9 times higher amongst primary pupils and an astonishing 50 times higher amongst secondary pupils.
The National Education Union called for a two week circuit break over half term to include schools, which the Wales Government and the Northern Ireland assembly have done - but the Government in Westminster has ignored this call. More severe measures are now called for as a result, the Government should not make this mistake again.
The government should include all schools in proposals for an immediate national lockdown and as a minimum be preparing for school rotas at the end of that period, including by actually meeting its promise to deliver broadband and equipment to those children who do not have them.
It is also vital that the government ensure proper financial support for all those affected by lockdown including crucial supply teachers and other staff.
Universities must move all non-essential teaching online if England goes into another national lockdown, a union has said.
The University and College Union (UCU) said it would be “incomprehensible” if teaching continued in person if England is put under tighter restrictions from next week as expected.
Figures put together by the union suggest that there have been more than 35,000 cases on campuses since term started last month.
The UCU general secretary, Jo Grady, said:
The health and safety of the country is being put at risk because of this government’s insistence that universities must continue with in-person teaching.
It would be incomprehensible if universities were allowed to continue to do this after the outbreaks we have seen on campuses across the country this term.
Ministers must tell universities to move all non-essential in-person teaching online as part of any national lockdown.
The union has been campaigning for a complete shift online for some time, and previously launched a petition demanding that the switch be made “where possible”.
It is thought that education settings will be told they can remain open if another lockdown is announced.
Local and regional and authorities across the UK are sending out different messages over Halloween celebrations tonight.
In some places, notably Scotland and tier 3 areas on England, trick-or-treating is being actively discouraged.
In other areas parents and children are being urged to respect their neighbours.

More procrastination leading to him having to do the opposite he insisted was right.
This man and his Cabinet are unbelievable.
The science, Labour under Starmer, Mayors, all called for what's likely to be announced.
How many deaths could have been avoided had he done a more stronger restrictive lockdown earlier.
He seems to have learned little, if anything, from March in reality.

Not that I expected any different response from you if you have one.
Lives could and should have been saved .the scientific advice stated in September WITHOUT a national circuit breaker or lockdown.
More LIVES would be lost.
That's not wrong at all.
Yes, it saves the NHS places too.

They key to this is to turn all the field hospital into covid quarantine hospitals for ALL the badly infected patients. This keeps ALL covid out of the main hospitals. Transfer the staff needed from main hospitals to these field hospitals. Thus allowing main hospitals to be covid free and actually carry out other life saving treatments. It will also reduce the infections in patients and staff and less staff will be off sick and self isolating. as usual the brainless media sheep dont mention this, just as they havent mentioned closing the chanel tunnel
in fairness the purpose of the lockdown is always to stop the NHS being overwhelmed, and we are not overwhelmed yet

Lockdown slowed infection rate enough that the main hospitals were no longer struggling so there was no need to use the nightingale?
That is utter madness, the field hospital would quarantine the disease so it would NOT spread through the main hospitals to other patients and staff. Put ALL the covid in 1 building away from everyone else. Then all staff to wear a tonne of PPE in the covid hospitals. This is the ONLY way to defeat this disease.
The main hospitals can then be used for all other procedures, all of which as are also essential. 25 million plus cancellations in main hospitals in 6 months because patients and staff are too scared to go there in case they catch it. with ALL covid sent to quarantine hospitals all that fear and infections in the main hospitals would disappear.
please do not fall for the line these field hospitals are not needed, they are needed and will be essential in the coming months. BUT they cannot be used for regular patients as they do NOT have the essential equipment, mris , x rays, ct scanners , operating theatres etc etc so they can ONLy be used for covid. The governments have dithered and failed to act on them, they must do so NOW

The numbers of staff then off with covid whether infected or self isolated or through fear of cathcing it would all fall through the floor. so far more staff would become available.
