what it basically means is that 300 people ratted on their neighbours ... the true number of parties was probably 10000

I'm pretty sure it's also why the UK's death rate seems so high compared to other European nations. There were some serious, serious blunders there.

I think there are a lot of interlinking factors. Because the majority of people are social distancing, the people that do get infected are getting less of a dose of it and this gives their bodies time to recognise there is an invader and fight against it before it does so much damage. More young people are being infected at present, who have greater resilience to it and then we have better treatments for those that do get hospitalised. Less people are ending up on ventilators because of the better treatment methods, which means NHS staff are less weighed down with dedicated care which means their time is more efficiently used.

The month heading into November is going to be critical for everything. If we can keep a handle on it all, we should be able to get past Christmas without catastrophe

and additionally mayors have called for advice to wear face masks in every indoor public space, and shop owners can refuse people from entering who do not wear a mask

this goes for Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Brabant-Zuidoost (Eindhoven, Helmond)

and some of our reporters had a interview with Dr Fauci what he thinks about our developments (he says we are going in the wrong direction and that we need to act fast with the right measures), him and our Jaap van Dissel know each other and he was surprised that Jaap isn't thinking same as him regarding this pandemic

no more audiences at sports matches for (at least) 3 weeks, can be extended for a longer period of time in case necessary

I've worn them since start of March.
So now it's just automatic.
I rarely go out anywhere at present as I can do advice work from home.

So it's only for a walk or if necessary to a store or shop.
I always have a facecovering on even outside as well as inside a building.

It's reached the point where I even forget to take it off once back in the house.

My garden is away from all paths and roads so out in the garden is the only place I don't wear them now.

Which if it's a facecovering, I wash after every use.
I have disposable ones too which I carry around with me too.

I will take no chances of risk.
Choosing the times too, to head to a store, I've found rarely more than a few numbers in when I have.
Using a facecovering or mask has just become routine to me now.
It was a bit irritating at first but now just a natural thing to do for me.

A UK government minister has been unable to clarify parts of the new coronavirus restrictions coming into effect in north-east England.

People who break a new law against mixing socially in seven parts of the North East face a maximum £6,400 fine.

The tougher measures - which are coming into force on Wednesday amid a spike in Covid-19 cases - will affect about two million people.

Skills Minister Gillian Keegan was asked on BBC Radio 4's Today programme whether the new restrictions apply to outside areas, such as pub and restaurant gardens.

"I'm sorry I can't clarify that. I don't know the answer to that question but I'm sure they can find out," she said.

Pressed on how people can be expected to keep up to date with the latest restrictions if a minister cannot, she said: "I'm sorry I can't answer that question. I'm sure there are many people who could. I don't represent the North East."

Labour's shadow health minister Alex Norris said Keegan's admission "will do little to inspire public confidence", adding government "incompetence" was hampering the UK's coronavirus response.

Basically we can do anything within our county (pub, shop, eat out, haircuts, beauty treatments, tattoos, gym) EXCEPT see family/friends at home.

Schools/colleges/unis are staying open AND grandparents/elderly guardians can still have kids in their care after school...

But social visits are forbidden?

half of our Soldier of Orange musical cast have coronavirus, as a result all performances have been postponed until October 4th

''The show, about the exploits of Dutch resistance fighter Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema during World War II, had restarted at the beginning of the month after a six-month hiatus but with an audience of around 300 instead of the usual number of 1,100.

Producer Fred Boot said at the time that it would be impossible in the long run to keep the show going with a reduced audience. ‘We are losing many thousands of euros with every performance,’ he told the AD.''

Tougher restrictions probably won't halt it tbh. If it's the former they're useless, if it's the latter making them tougher won't mean anything to those who don't follow the ones that already exist.

the press conference today seemed very much like a warning ... the same way they warned people in march. I am certain there is a shelf life on heavy restrictions, and the north is basically ignoring the limits on social interacting in homes

Eight patients die following Covid-19 outbreak at hospital...

Eight people have died at a hospital in South Wales after 82 cases of coronavirus were identified there.

Temporary restrictions to services have now been put in place at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, including suspending planned surgery, with the exception of a small number of urgent cancer cases.

On Wednesday, the restrictions were brought in by Cwm Taf University Health Board at 2pm in an effort to help manage the outbreak, which has been linked to transmission within the hospital site.

Six patients are currently in intensive care at the hospital, which is in Rhondda Cynon Taf – one of the areas of Wales subjected to local lockdown restrictions.

On Wednesday, Welsh education minister Kirsty Williams said the Welsh Government was working with the health board and Public Health Wales to address the “issues” which have given rise to the outbreak.

She told the Welsh Government Covid-19 press briefing: “We understand that this is a serious situation and how upsetting it is for all those involved.

“We are working with the local health authority’s senior management team and Public Health Wales to understand and, crucially, address the issues that have arisen at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital to bring that outbreak under control and learn the lessons of that so they can be applied in other healthcare settings.”

She added: “The situation is a worrying one, and all steps are being taken to protect existing patients, staff, and to ensure that those residents that were due to leave the hospital are directed to appropriate care in other hospitals in the near vicinity.”

The rise in cases at the hospital come one week after the health board said 34 cases of Covid-19 had been recorded across two of its wards, linked mainly to transmission within the site.

In a statement on Wednesday, the health board said that despite teams working to manage the outbreak, “additional cases linked to transmission within the hospital” had been confirmed in recent days.

Paul Mears, chief executive of the health board, said: “We recognise the concern that these temporary changes will cause and would like to assure our patients and communities that managing this outbreak is our key priority.

“Our teams continue to work to take all necessary measures to achieve this and we have taken a range of swift and decisive actions to try to manage this outbreak, which include immediate closure of affected wards, risk assessments of affected and at-risk wards, reviews of infection prevention and control measures and their implementation, increased testing of healthcare staff and testing of all hospital admissions.

“These decisions have not been taken lightly, and we understand that they will impact our patients, their families, our staff and partner organisations.

“However, the safety of our patients and staff is of the utmost importance and we believe this is the right course of action, based on the professional advice given to us.”

Adult patients requiring an emergency admission following assessment will either be taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, or the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The emergency department at Royal Glamorgan Hospital will remain open for walk-in patients and those who can be treated within the department.

Welsh Ambulance Service patients, excluding children, will be diverted to the other hospitals.

The self-contained paediatric wards at the hospital will remain open, while the Tirion birthing centre is due to reopen on October 5.

A health board spokesman said it is working closely with Public Health Wales to increase the capacity and speed of testing and results for both patients and staff.

“These changes will be reviewed on a daily basis and decisions to restart emergency admissions at Royal Glamorgan Hospital will be made in conjunction with Public Health Wales,” he said.

Andrew RT Davies, shadow health minister for the Welsh Conservatives, called on the Welsh Government to explore using field hospitals and other health facilities to alleviate pressure on the Royal Glamorgan.

He added: “This is very concerning, particularly as many of the additional cases are linked to transmission within the hospital, and so questions over processes and protocols must be asked.”

Correct.

In relation to deaths to population.
We are likely the worst in the World, even on the reduced number of deaths figures the government brought into being recently.

Correct.

In relation to deaths to population.
We are likely the worst in the World, even on the reduced number of deaths figures the government brought into being recently.

Based on the numbers given on this thread, UK and US rates are pretty much identical at 63 deaths per 100k population. Italy is almost identical at 62/100k and Spain is slightly higher at 68/100k.

Sooo we're not even the "worst" hit in Europe, however we are one of a cluster of countries with very similar numbers that have been worse hit than others.

Agreed.

However, I am suspicious of our total figure anyway.
Since the amending of its construction.

Which is why I qualified with ' likely' not certainly.

The growth in cases of coronavirus may be slowing down, the largest study of the infection in England suggests.

A team at Imperial College London analysed samples from 84,000 people chosen at random from across the country.

They said the R number, the virus's reproduction number, appears to have fallen since measures including the "rule of six" were introduced.

However, they warn cases are high, with one in every 200 people infected.

The React study is highly influential, both due to its size and because it gives an up-to-date picture of how the virus is spreading. The last samples used in the analysis were collected as recently as Saturday.

It was the previous React report that found infections were doubling every seven to eight days in late August and early September.

This, in turn, led to warnings that there could be 50,000 cases a day by mid-October if that pattern continued.

Then the research group estimated the R number - the number of people each infected person is passing the virus onto, on average - was 1.7.

The latest analysis, of swab samples collected between 19 and 26 September, suggests the R number has fallen to around 1.1 - although the precise figure is uncertain.

As for the Corbyn issue.
I think a fine is in order, it was in an indoor setting too, however if it's his first bad judgement on distancing a warning is more in order, as Jeremy Hunt indicated.

However how many times has Stanley Johnson flouted the guidelines now.
Plus has he even ever had a warning.

Again however, I find this trial by press of naming and shaming unnerving.
I wonder how many journalists clamouring around places will be observing the social distancing rules.
Of course who'd be photographing them?
Inside or outside.

Anyway arista, if you could think of enlightening this government's Ministers as to what's on the front pages at least too, it may actually help them in interviews.

George Eustace on Kay Burley.
Hadn't seen or heard the predictions 4 million could end up unemployed.
How long has that been mentioned over the recent weeks.
Then he stated, he'd seen a projection of possibly 2 million.
When asked where he'd seen that by her, he said he couldn't recall.

I cannot believe how badly Ministers are prepared for interviews now.
Plus it seems, the answer to any awkward question is fast becoming, they haven't heard that,or seen it so cannot comment.

For goodness sake, they think the public are idiots and treat us as such too.

we will only start to get an indication of what unemployment is likely to rise to now that furlough has ended. How can ministers possibly know the financial status of all employers in the country .... crazy to even think it's possible.

As to what the current restrictions are in a given locality ... again, how are ministers supposed to know that ... there is plenty to criticise without being completely stupid it about it

Belgium has eased down some of its measures

belgian people with covid symptoms only have to go one week into quarantine instead of normal 2 weeks

people are no longer required to wear mask outdoors, but they are still required to wear a mask indoors, and also 1.5 metre distance society remains the same too

belgian also ease down on ''bubble of 5'' so again more than 5 people allowed to visit your home

No one is or was saying Ministers should know what the unemployment figures could be.
Although companies are indicating their likely cuts to or losses of jobs.

The point I was making is, when asked about projections reported in the media.
Minister's trying to say they haven't heard of them and never seen them.

As if they never watch TV, read papers or listen to radio.
They of course must have.

Restrictions for England to be standardised into three tiers

The government is to push ahead with a new "three-tier" approach to coronavirus restrictions in local areas of England, the BBC understands.

The Department of Health confirmed last month the system was being considered - but it has now been signed off by government officials and politicians.

According to a memo seen by the BBC, public health officials will receive precise proposals later on Thursday.

The Department of Health said there were "no imminent changes" expected.

A spokesman for No 10 added: "We keep all of the measures which we put in place under review - if there is anything further to set out then we will do so to the House".

The government's aim is to replace the patchwork of existing Covid-19 restrictions across the country.

Areas that fall into tier one will have fewer than 100 cases per 100,000 of population and will need to adhere to national restrictions - such as the "rule of six" and social distancing.

Tier two would kick in where cases are above 100 per 100,000. Restrictions for these areas would be similar to those currently in place in large parts of northern England, such as bans on household meetings.

And tier three areas would have significantly higher rates and would face full lockdowns - excluding schools and essential businesses, like supermarkets.

The memo seen by the BBC shows plans for additional money for local authorities placed into tiers two or three.

Local authorities would get £1 per head of population if placed into tier two and £2 per head for tier three.

When all areas are "mapped" onto the new system, it is not believed any areas will be moved to level three at this stage.

The BBC understands there are concerns within Public Health England at the speed of the transition.

But there is also an acknowledgement the new system could "simplify and rationalise the current set up".

Areas in category 2(b) Part 1 will receive complimentary brown bread, whilst those in all sections of 4(e) will be allowed to design their own flag, which must be placed on the back of their car. They may not drive the car. Anyone with a surname beginning with the letters A, C, M, P or V will be given a £4 stipend for each year of their Netflix subscription, whilst all others will be given a year of YouTube Premium and a four pack of Monster.

the new system could "simplify and rationalise the current set up".

However sharp contrast to our PM.
This woman is rightly suspended from the SNP.

Extremely thoughtless of her, dangerous too.

If we're being totally fair, it's actually significantly worse than Cummings... she got on a public train (and not just a short jaunt, a 5 hour train journey) after getting a positive test. It would be one thing if she had "been exposed to someone who had it" but thought she didn't have it; still careless but a mistake nonetheless - but after a positive test? it's inexplicable.

She's broken the guidelines and should certainly resign or be fired but she hasn't done anything that she could reasonably face criminal prosecution for.

A civil compensation claim, maybe.

Failing to isolate after testing positive did become a crime (punishable by fine) as of Monday in England at least, not sure about Scotland

she can't sack her, she doesn't have the power to do anything other than remove the whip, which has been done

Bots is right arista.

As an MP she cannot be sacked by the Party or leader as an MP.

She has to decide if she stands down as an MP.
Only the MP can resign as one.

I'm assuming that those are fixed-penalty fines though, which are not prosecutions (they're an alternative to prosecution and don't result in a criminal record). I haven't actually looked into it in any detail but I assume that's the case, as court proceedings for everyone failing to adhere to Covid guidelines would be impossible to maintain.

i think it will be the same as all fixed penalties - pay quickly - get a discount - don't pay and it goes to court, so it is a prosecution, you have broken the law - but there is an "easy" method to shorten the process

The UK's R number, the rate at which coronavirus spreads, has risen to between 1.3 and 1.6.

Data released by the government's scientific advisory group Sage shows the figure for the whole of the UK has risen compared with last week when it was between 1.2 and 1.5.

Sage has cautioned that while there are some early indications which suggest the growth of the epidemic might be slowing, it is too early to draw firm conclusions.

Any number over 1 means the virus is spreading exponentially.

PM Boris Johnson has suggested the recent spike in coronavirus cases in the UK is a result of a "fraying of people's discipline" over the summer.

He said compliance with the virus restrictions had been "high at first" but then "everybody got a bit, kind of complacent and blasé".

Cases have increased sharply across the UK since the end of August.

After starting to relax restrictions before the summer, the government has since had to toughen its measures.

It comes as the latest UK figures show there have been a further 6,968 cases and another 66 deaths.

The R number - a measure of how many other people each person with the virus is infecting - has risen to between 1.3 and 1.6.

However, there is more evidence that new coronavirus infections may be increasing more slowly than in previous weeks.

In total, at least 16.8 million people in the UK - about one in four people - face extra coronavirus measures on top of the national rules, including two-thirds of people in the north of England.

The prime minister, who has been speaking to BBC journalists from around the country, denied that a lack of testing in north-east England had caused the virus to get out of control in the region.

"That's not the reality… the nation came together in March and April, what happened over the summer was a bit of sort of fraying of people's discipline and attention to those rules," he said.

The government has faced strong criticism for its mixed messages since it started easing the national lockdown in late spring.

After a steady decline in confirmed cases since the first peak in April, cases began rising again in July, with the rate of growth increasing sharply from the end of August.
