it's pretty obvious the way it's all heading. If the numbers don't come down within a couple of weeks, they will go back to the support bubble stage. I can see December/January being pretty much closed down and I think they need to look at schools opening over the summer and closing over the winterI don't think that's a terrible idea for schools, actually. Have more of the US structure (fewer breaks through the year, one long three to four month break - similar to Universities as well) but inverted so that the long break is November to February. I could probably get on board with that. I find the structure of school breaks a bit too scattered in general and have always said they should have a longer Christmas break and get rid of the October and Easter ones (just have them as long 4-day weekends).

[A man with serious breathing issues says he
was "ambushed" into wearing a face covering on a plane.
EasyJet has apologised after one of its pilots was filmed
threatening to remove the passenger from the flight.
The man was carrying an exemption card - but it was rejected
by the crew on his journey from Jersey to Gatwick.]

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-54075771

IF the exemption card is officially backed by a Doctor's name and official medical stamp.
Fair enough.

Although why anyone with serious breathing issues would even be thinking of getting on a plane, never mind doing so, is frankly beyond me.

In fact I'd doubt any Doctor would advise anyone with serious breathing issues to get on a plane either.

...(..I think...)...as much as possible with some school restrictions and temporary closures etc...and because there will possibly be frequent times when a bubble is missing lessons etc, through having to be quarantined...?...through the autumn/winter term seasons...the lesson time that would have been used on things like Harvest Festival rehearsals../..Christmas Productions rehearsals etc...will and should be used for catch up to essential learning...I mean, that’s was the primary importance of schools reopening and being full size and full time classes again...that the children’s education was being damaged, which obviously it was...so I personally think that would be more of a solution...to keep the break sizes as they are but to look at how that lesson time for more ‘family events’ which can’t go ahead in the same way...can be used for inevitable catch up time for many children and their school...

An expert was on this morning a couple of weeks ago, saying with all the social distancing, mask wearing, sanitizer, screens etc it wont only help covid it will also help with other things like cold, flu and bugs.....

Well guess what....within a week of my kids having to go back to "normal" as its safe.....and bearing in mind they werent ill at all the whole of lockdown....my son is full of a cold from nursery, lots of other kids at the nursery have colds, my sister who works there has caught a sickness bug

My daughter in year 1 is full of a cold as are the majority of her class

My 5 month old baby who hadnt caught any sort of illness....now full of a cold! He didnt sleep a wink last night!

There are kids in other years of the school with colds too

So with all the precautions in place...and its been just 1 week....it cant even stop colds spreading like wildfire.....how it is going to stop covid spreading?!

I honestly think everything in place just hasnt worked as there are too many u turns here and there, it is confusing, people are being pressured to go to work and school and told it is safe. Yet cases and deaths have now gone up

I dont know what the real solution is to it all but whatever we have in place now isnt working.

I feel that by-the-numbers learning can happen at any time (even a fully grown adult can quite easily catch up on primary school level maths etc.) whereas the more "vibrant" social learning and engagement is irreplaceable and absolutely what was "missing" during lockdown and remote learning. Maybe that's coming from a biased perspective though, at both ends of the scale. Traditional learning is easy for my eldest and irrelevant for my youngest. I guess it's kids who are already struggling to keep up in mainstream classes who would suffer in academic terms. Though tbh I'm inclined to think that with the world being up in the air, more engaged "practical learning" and mental stimulation is more important than a page of long multiplication.

These Colds or Flu
should be different to Covid-19 symptoms

Yes but if its possible to transmit colds and flu from person to person then surely logic says so can a covid infection. A lot of these kids may be asymptomatic

Schools are safe as it can be.Indeed, we know quite firmly that indoor social gatherings are the main factor but people are (begrudgingly, I will accept understandably) hesitant to give them up. There are economic implications too. But I do have to go back to my long standing view...

Pubs, cafes and restaurants etc. should not be open for sitting in. If that means needing a HUGE government stimulus to keep those businesses afloat, so be it.

A cold already had or transmitted to a vulnerable or elderly person too, who may then from someone else get this virus.
Then that adds to the massive breathing problems likely too.

You have talked about confusion and you are right.

Of course the logic has to be children can transmit the virus.
You're right there too.

What an almighty mess this all is.

...thing is though, TS...it doesn’t matter whether you agree or don’t agree or whether I agree or don’t agree...because there are obviously lots of perspectives to look at and things to consider...?...because the government have said..’this is all for our children, they’re being damaged and their education is of the utmost etc and they just have to be on the catchup etc...’...and then they all said...(...many parents for their various reasons...)....YAYYYY! We’re down with that as well...so any extended break being implemented...?...would just be so inconsistent and completely contrary to...full class sizes/full time school hours are essential for our children right now...making term times shorter is the dumbest logic...obviously imo....otherwise it’s just ‘arranging to fit’ like the government do...

..actually the other thing with this.../...sorry I missed what you said about your little TS ladies...as you say, you have ‘both ends’ perspective as it were...one with learning difficulties and the other finding it very easy etc...the ‘mainstream’ of most classes, though...is more the thing and it’s the ‘mainstream’ that can hugely get overlooked as well...(..in the most non COVID of times...)..they’re not struggling to keep up exactly...but each lesson is hugely important for them and lessons lost do have a huge impact through higher schooling years, into the future...

Like flipping the year upside down almost, so kids are in school through summer and have the long break over winter instead, and removing (or shortening) the half term breaks to make the winter break even longer (say 10 to 12 weeks). They'd have just as many school hours, just more of them over the "safer" summer months and tucked up at home in winter instead.

...thing is though, TS...(...because this has obviously been discussed within education many times/rearranging terms etc...)..social interactions are so important with children as well, as as ‘outdoors and reasonable weather..’..etc...’tucked up ..’ ...wouldn’t really give them a balance as much as it’s given now, I don’t think...having their big time off in the summer months when the weather is hoped to be more expanding for them in their activities etc...?...it just makes more sense, I think...and also for both staff and parents, if they’re either having ‘days out’ type of staycation or a U.K. holiday...again, the summer months are often the ones that can give the most options...as opposed to winter having shorter daylight hours and more inclement weather etc...I mean, I guess that up in Scotland...you only might have one or two days of summer sunshine......but for the little British school people, they really do need their summer in summertime because it’s just so more user friendly with those most essential social interactions...

I don’t understand how 6 people from one family equates to two lots of 3 from two families which also equates to 1 person from each of six families..

Surely a group of 6 people from 6 different families will be far more risky / potent ??

Partly I think it's because of how "grouped together" people are likely to be but even then, obviously, 10 people in a large living room or garden is going to be far less risky than even 4 people in a very small living room. It's all very arbitrary and I agree... logically speaking, in a large enough area, even something like 12 people from 3 different households is probably less of a spreading risk than 6 people from 6 different households.

A Canadian flight was cancelled and police were called because a child was not wearing a mask.

Safwan Choudhry says WestJet wanted his 19-month-old to wear a mask, but the baby girl would not stop crying.

The airline says the issue was not with the infant, who is below the age required to wear a mask, but with Mr Choudhry's three-year-old.

Tuesday morning's Flight 652 from Calgary to Toronto was stopped, and all passengers were ordered to disembark.

"It's unlike anything I have ever witnessed, let alone experienced," Mr Choudhry told the BBC.

We've had lots of new cases in Norfolk. Over 100 members of staff at Banham Poultry in Attleborough (about ten miles from me) tested positive. Although I've not heard much about people in my area coming down with the virus during lockdown, I'm hearing about more and more cases lately. One of the MPs I used to work with reckons we're heading for another lockdown.

i think we are heading toward more restrictions, there won't be a fully fledged lock down. The schools have just gone back, we have had the first cooler weather and boom, the infection rate goes up, it can only get worse from here.

I'm also very concerned that Boris seems to have his head in the clouds. All his talk of near instant testing is just lies

I find myself agreeing. I know that this is a new situation and no one get's it 100% right, but bloody hell. It's like they're lurching from disaster to a knee-jerk reaction, back to a disaster...

I would be very, very surprised if they went anywhere near full "Spring-style" lockdown again. Frankly, the economy cannot take it, and they are very aware of that. I don't see them closing non-essential shops, I don't see them closing offices and workplaces, I don't see them winding down NHS services (the backlogs from last time are still an absolute disaster). I'd be very surprised if they close schools, and think that'll only really become a possibility if some evidence emerges that having them open is a major contributor to the spread. They might have to consider going remote for older teens though.

I do still think they're going to have to look at pubs, bars and dine-in restaurants though... and other similar indoor activities and gathering places.

I think she's close to on the money with most of it tbh . Seems to be being painted as a Covid denier when all she's really asking for is for people not to be so blinkered by Covid stats/fears that they fail to see the other very real risks that are present - mental health being a massive one.

She does seem a little too fired up to get her point across well on telly though, especially when trying to engage with a slack-jaw like Holmes. Wasn't he saying it was aliens or the overlord Xenu or something quite recently?

Video of Spanish surfer arrested for breaching coronavirus quarantine goes viral...

https://uk.yahoo.com/?p=us

A video of a Spanish surfer being arrested after breaching coronavirus quarantine rules has gone viral.

In the footage, the woman can be seen trying to escape capture by police before being handcuffed and taken away.

The woman - who had tested positive for COVID-19 - was arrested on Monday at Zurriola beach in San Sebastián, in Spain’s Basque Country, after going surfing when she should have been in quarantine.

After confirming that she was meant to be at home, several officers – some in protective suits to avoid contagion – attempted to remove the woman from the water.

Video footage captured a struggle as the woman, a lifeguard, refused to stop surfing and tried to flee from the officers.

She was arrested for disobeying authorities and crimes against public health.

If it's true, I'm amazed Hancock won the day on this actually.
The likely worst Health secretary ever.

This just reflects, the mess this government is, the mess it creates,( likely as diversion tactics).
Then the mess it leaves people in too.

I fear we have very dangerously incompetent people leading the Country now.

It just seems like near disaster after disaster while Johnson still tries to act the clown.

Are you in a support bubble with them?

You can meet people indoors as long as your group is no larger than six people. However, if your support bubble is larger than six, you can still socialise together, just make sure you don't invite anyone else.

Btw at work you shouldn’t be mingling with others but keeping your distance

The rule of six is nothing compared to what we lived with for three months earlier this year so I'm not sure why people are blasting how 'draconian' it is now

It actually allows people from more different households to meet up indoors than is allowed for now

I'm not moaning at the level of 6.
Just at the incompetence of the whole process by those who should be leading.

No,in this all won't be got right.
However so much wrong and needing to be changed so often, does not inspire confidence.

My moan is, that this government dangerously relaxed way too much as to activity and numbers too, way too soon.

It's a bit like planning a journey scenario to me with this government..
All saying we'll go this way, that way then faffing on and procrastinating so much, they end up going nowhere in reality.

Now my hands up, 100%, this is not a government I wanted, in fact I didn't want any single party government.
I wanted a combination of the best of most parties, dealing with brexit of course.
Since this nightmare, admittedly for any government in power, came in too, I think that would have been better too.
To deal with it more competently.

However any government making the mess this lot has, would be getting the same fury from me as I direct at this seemingly more and more reactionary hopeless lot.

IF, and I hope for the Country and even this awful government too this doesn't happen.
However if this Winter sees chaos as to this virus again.
Then I will be dreading just what will.need to be done in that medium to worst case scenario.
With not a scrap of faith I'd have to trust any Minister and certainly never this PM as to this pandemic.

i would advise these girls to just go into isolation for the required 2 weeks, but i wouldn't hand out a fine

handing out fines, making strict rules will give more food for those anti-maskers

There's been a party of 10+ people in the house next door to mine basically every weekend like clockwork for the whole 6 years I've lived here... including last night, and all the way through the first lockdown.

They are hyper-committed to their parties though. For the first two years we lived here we had constant run-ins with them over noise (one of which turned physically aggressive) and reported them dozens of times ... eventually, in their quest to party, they built a giant shed/outhouse in their garden to have their weekend parties in... at the cost of several thousand pounds... which is just hilarious, but at least it solved the noise problem (we can still hear them with a window open or whatever, but there isn't music blaring through the walls at 3am).

Anyway - the point being, they haven't stopped at any point for Covid. There seemed to be less people back in April/May but one assumes that's because some of the people they invite were being sensible. Plenty of people kicking around out there last night, though. Some people are just never going to comply .

Total UK amount of Covid-19 Deaths: 41,628

New cases of Covid-19 : 3,330

https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/

So that’s roughly 25,000 new confirmed infections in the last week !!!

A top physician was saying on Sky News earlier that in a couple of weeks we will see thousands of hospital admissions then a couple of weeks after that it will be thousands of DEAD ... older people- it won’t be these selfish youngsters !!

Soon it could be up to 10,000 new infections per day !!

Given they plan on keeping schools : colleges : Universities open this time it means that all of us working in education will be cannon fodder :(

I wonder what so called world beating system he and this utterly hopeless PM are thinking of to make things sound better than the truth really is as to this.

We've never had anything remotely world beating and it seems again, this lot haven't a clue.

I fear too their so called, if there's any done at all, preparation for a second wave, is further pie in the sky hope, rather than competent and proper CARING policy to it.

Why are there no tests available?

the only possible reason is that they have reduced testing capacity. Sure, more testing is required these days, but we are nowhere near the threshold for capacity that they said they had.

In the top 10 covid hotspots, there was no testing available yesterday .... that's crazy... and that's the real reason we have restrictions

Coronavirus deaths now just 1% of national total as lowest week since March recorded

Data released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that there were 78 Covid-19 deaths between August 29 and September 4 - the lowest weekly figure since March

The number of people dying from any cause in England and Wales has dipped to more than 15% below average - while Covid-19 deaths continue to plummet, data released today shows.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal that in the week ending September 4 - the most recent available - 78 people died after contracting coronavirus.

This is the lowest weekly figure since March, and the stats reveal that there were nearly 1,500 fewer overall deaths than the five-year average.

This is the lowest weekly figure since March, and the stats reveal that there were nearly 1,500 fewer overall deaths than the five-year average.

i'm sure we all hope that the number of serious illnesses and deaths remains low, but we have to be aware of the inertia and the exponential rise in infection rate that can occur. We are in uncharted territory and given that it is best to be cautious at least through this winter. If we are not, it's difficult to get it back under control as we all know

The deaths are people who have died of covid after being diagnosed with it weeks ago...just remember that.

Hold on tight for winter...and just be nice to everyone.

Watching the really atrociously incompetent health secretary today.
Should leave most just wondering what on earth has he been doing all this time.

What an absolute shambles from both him and his leader.

Ambulances were queuing up outside a hospital in Bolton yesterday, that doesn't strike me as a system under control

It's depressing.
Putting aside the forewarning we had in January of what was more than likely to come to us, never mind only possible.

To now, 6 months on from the national lockdown, be in this chaos still as to testing is disgraceful and dangerous incompetence.

I doubt anyone could have done worse than Hancock and Johnson on this actually.

This has been a really awful, unexpected and virtually unknown crisis for any government to have had thrown at them.
I felt for them to have to deal with it.

I supported fully the national lockdown.
Which however should been time used by any kind of competent PM and government, to fully plan for any further concerns regarding this pandemic in the future.
Which they haven't done and have failed dangerously.

There's a lot of the low number of deaths at present comments so it's nothing to worry about..
Which ignore that now it's only those who were diagnosed in the last 28 days.
If someone was diagnosed on 1st September with covid, then died on September 30th..
They won't be in the deaths figure.

This was a time, if there ever was one, to pull together.
With all elected representatives to work solidly together.
Everyone who voted for whoever and whatever party, are ALL affected, or potentially so, by this virus.
Yet, this lot have sought to divide, confuse with conflicting muddled advice, react rather than prepare and deceive by manipulating figures, even on loved ones deaths.
Also testing and the protection equipment farce, dangerous farce however.

Hancock has the support of Johnson, they are linked completely.
I doubt the UK has ever been so badly, incompetently and dangerously served by any previous PM and health secretary in a time of crisis.
As it has by these 2 failing individuals.
