IF the government choose to ride over the input and knowledge of the area and people from the Mayors, local government leaders and even MPs,
One of whom is Graham Brady Conservative who at present also isn't happy with the government plan.
That is likely to alienate the population there, it's going to send a worrying message in a constitutional sense.
I think the government need to think very carefully here.
The Mayor, Andy Burnham, like him or not..made a reasonable request for those particularly on the minimum wage, not to be forced to lose income.
This lockdown of tier 3 would have been a hopefully few weeks to a couple of months duration.
The government can find funds easily for other projects when it suits them.
They in my view are wrong here.
They should ensure no one on the minimum wage loses out.
As they should also in any area, where they enforce tier 3 too.
It's worrying and should be, that we have a government acting so confrontational and dictatorial.
It should put in place a circuit breaker across the board in my view.
With all the right and same support there was during the lockdown from March.
If you have to lockdown, then little has changed for the better.
So no way should the support package be diminished in any way either.
like it or not, a lot of people in Manchester have been ignoring the restrictions and will continue to do so. We have had varying restrictions in places across the country since the summer and its done no good at all. Closing bars wont achieve anything when the infection has largely come from the young/student population. People wont stop meeting up in each others homes, and that can't be enforced
There is a simple message ... people need to social distance ... sure it can be enforced in a public setting, and it has been largely successful, but that's not where the infection is spreading
All that authorities can do is keep ramming home the message about not mixing within the home environment and hope that those currently ignoring it get the message eventually

then you need to change that, no more meetups at people's homes
otherwise fine them even more, or jail sentences for not sticking to the rules

ireland has gone into what appears to be a pretty permanent lockdown ... this is just all economically devastating .... and Germany and France won't be able to bail out the EU from this
crazy, so many parts of Ireland particularly rural Ireland has such low infection rates, In the town I come from there have been a handful of cases, and no covid deaths, yet all non essential businesses are shut

not many listen in my country either, and most of all those ''Viruswaarheid - VirusTruth'' morons are daily protesting in The Hague now, insulting our parliament with very vile nasty names
also reading how some think of Netherlands as ''most fascist country'' or some who say ''even under hitler you had more freedom'' makes me cringe and ashamed to be dutch
in Germany almost everyone can obey the regulations nicely, not many cases in majority of country, most hospitals over there are now trying to get people with other illnesses to come again and get treatments
as for the anti-maskers with them, that group just gets smaller and smaller as months go by i've seen on their news

this is that news in Germany i talked about, that one region whom will enter full lockdown today at 14:00 PM
Many people are just tired of restrictions, we can't get away from that. The longer it goes on, the more will ignore them. It's just normal human behaviour. Come Christmas time many will just ignore restrictions, and then we will have 3 months of hell until the better weather appears. It's not something unique either, restrictions just cannot work unless it is very short term and short term restrictions are not effective in dampening down infection

so what measures can work
*Face Mask Requirements indoors AND outdoors
*Full Lockdown, people only leaving their homes for either supermarket or doctor on paperwork form
*Work from Home most of the time
*a Ban on Protesting rights, no more protests, lock the anti-maskers up in their homes so they cannot interfere with our plans of eliminating covid-19
most of these are a must, if we want to keep enjoying our freedom healthy and in a safe way once covid pandemic is over

I dunno. 1) They tried local lockdowns and it didn't really work probably because 2) Germany has a comparatively orderly and "sensible" society compared to the UK, I find it HIGHLY unlikely that people in a localised lockdown in the UK will stick to their own area, and not just take a jaunt to the nearest area that's open for business.

barricade it then with barbed wire, and place temporary borders with army forces
and only allow people outdoors with valid paperwork forms, what for they have to leave their homes

i think it's a lot more fundamental than that. The people in the UK just don't take well to authority and its the same in many countries across the world. Countries that are doing well are respectful of authority. Young people have rebelled against authority since time began, so they are, predictably, leading the charge, but they are by no means alone
In many ways I equate this with smoking. We have known for decades that smoking was bad for you .... did it stop people from starting to smoke? No. It has taken generations to get the message across that it would be better not to smoke. Covid is going to take it's course

Of course he and his Ministers got awkward questioning when he did.
However with over half the Country and growing in restrictions or harder restrictions.
He may look better telling people daily what's going on, and what is likely to be

Pupils sent home in half of England's secondary schools
https://c.files.bbci.co.uk/03DC/production/_114888900_hi063148246.jpg
[Almost half of secondary schools in England
sent home one or more pupils
because of Covid incidents last week,
the latest attendance figures show.
It meant pupils having to isolate in 46% of secondary
and 16% of primary schools.
Disruption from Covid has been
increasing in schools - but the way of counting
has changed which prevents comparisons
with previous weeks.]

I thought that but in theory there could be thousands or hundreds of thousands of the the confirmed cases who MAY have had a very mild dose or asymptotic one some months ago .. and didn’t know they’d even had it .
The cases where they’ve had it a second time appear to be getting a more severe symptoms...so that fits

No Manchester Agreement
reached.
Burnham will get it Live at 5PM
from Johnson PM
The Local Government Secretary Robert Jenrick says:
“I’m disappointed that despite recognising the gravity of the situation, the mayor has been unwilling to take the action that is required to get the spread of the virus under control in Greater Manchester and reach an agreement with the government. I have therefore advised the prime minister that these discussions have concluded without an agreement."
We understand Tier 3 restrictions - the highest level - will now be imposed. All pubs and bars, unless they are serving substantial meals, as well as betting shops, casinos, bingo halls, adult gaming centres, and soft play areas will be closed for a month.
We don't yet know when this period will begin.

The sale of Durex jumped when social-distancing rules were relaxed in the summer, says maker Reckitt Benckiser.
The consumer goods giant said growth in its health arm, which includes condoms and "sexual wellbeing products", rose 12.6% in the last three months.
Sales of Dettol, Cillit Bang, and air fresheners also jumped, helped by workers improving their new home-office environment, Reckitt said.
Total group sales in the last quarter rose 13% to £3.5bn on last year.
"Relaxations of social distancing regulations resulted in improved demand for our sexual well-being products," it said.
During the spring lockdown Reckitt saw a sharp drop in demand for condoms as people had less sex.

I agree with some of the things but he was happily gambling on lives to blackmail Boris for the numbers he wanted Manchester should have been on lockdown weeks back as the hospitals are close to running out of beds
Apparently the government offered Manchester an extra 60m and Manchester came back wanting 65m ... so now they will likely get less than 60
How does that work ??
It’s not WheelerDeeler ...surely the Government will have to stand by their best offer ..

yup and then you'd need to set up some more of those temporary hospitals again (like in the first wave what they did with Nightingale)
Our numbers are shocking although some of the areas are reducing but they are too high. They have been reducing in some areas week on week and so hopefully that will continue. I imagine there may be some protests on the back of this though sadly.
...I know, it’s easy to get lost in other aspects with the ‘financial support’, Annie...and the shock of that...but the figure graphs of infection are pretty grim......

it means the age demographic affected has changed, the infection has been passed on to the older age groups and due to their age, they require hospitalisation, which causes those numbers to go up. However, it does look like the younger group are taking notice, so hopefully this will result in less infection transfers to the older age groups. It will take a few weeks to filter through

The slides don't contradict that. Two things can be true at the same time, namely that cases are decreasing in some segments of the population while cases overall are still rising

My issue wasn't with the age of those infected it was the rate of infection as a whole in the UK wich is rising exponentially. As he clearly stated in the address, not sure why this is causing so much confusion.

How rude!! ...
If cases reduce across all age groups that means by definition it will be on the wane, but there is nothing to suggest that would or could happen.. nothing.
It's never been disputed that this is something that predominantly affects those 45+ in relation to hospitalisation. Where in that info was the suggestion can or will change?
The cases will double, older persons will be hospitalised and or ventilated and the over 80s will just be allowed to die as peacefully as possible.
I see no happy happy joy joy outcome here. Less dream more nightmare.

The initial rise in cases began with younger people contracting the virus and then filtered through to older age groups so I'm hoping that this will be mirrored in the decrease of cases, it seems there are now going to be fewer and fewer young people spreading the virus

Rubbish...there is no age group that has a greater propensity for contracting the virus than another. The difference is how those react to the infection, with the severity on a sliding scale with age in the main.
If people of any age are mixing then the virus will continue to spread. Your theory isn't optimism it's fantasy. Sorry I sound a bit doom and gloom but that's how it is really.

Nottingham Trent University said the third-year students involved in the breach of coronavirus restrictions had been suspended. Officers on patrol spotted a party in Lenton on Tuesday night but were told everyone had left. But inside they found more than 30 people hiding and, when challenged, organisers complained they should be having the "time of their lives". Mixing of households or support bubbles indoors has been banned since Nottingham went into tier two restrictions on 14 October.

Deaths after flu shots in South Korea fan fears, but authorities find no link...
SEOUL (Reuters) - Nine people have died after getting flu shots in South Korea in the past week, raising concerns over the vaccine's safety just as the seasonal inoculation programme is expanded to head off potential COVID-19 complications.
Five new deaths were reported on Wednesday alone, but authorities had no plans to suspend the vaccination programme, unless investigations, including post mortems, revealed a link, which preliminary findings had not.
"We have reviewed whether it is appropriate to continue the vaccination or better to suspend and wait for the results," health official Kim Joong-gon told a briefing.
"We came to the conclusion that the deaths had no direct relations with the vaccination given the limited data we have now and without detailed post mortem reports."
Kim said a preliminary investigation into six victims revealed five had underlying conditions.
Health officials also said no toxic substances had been found in the same vaccine administered to other people.
Coming just weeks after the roll out of the national vaccine programme was temporarily suspended over safety worries, the deaths, which include a 17-year-old boy and a man in his 70s, have dominated news headlines in South Korea.
With winter approaching, the country is planning to inoculate 30 million people in a bid to prevent the health system being overloaded by patients with flu and COVID-19 exposure.
However, the start of a free jab programme for around 19 million eligible people was suspended for three weeks after it was discovered that some 5 million doses, which need to be refrigerated, had been exposed to room temperature while being transported to a medical facility.

King Willem-Alexander a video statement and a apology for their inappropriate holiday to Greece
''The king, Maxima and their youngest daughter returned home from their Greek holiday home after less than a day following a public outcry in the Netherlands about the trip. The two older girls returned on Tuesday evening.
‘It hurts to have betrayed your trust in us,’ the king said. ‘Even though the trip was in line with the regulations, it was very unwise not to take into account the impact of the new restrictions on our society.’
The royals’ holiday home is in a code yellow zone but last week prime minister Mark Rutte had urged everyone to minimise travelling, as part of a new package of measures to reduce the spread of coronavirus.
The king did not mention the decision to allow the two older girls to return home several days later. According to the state information service RVD, there were no seats left of the plane to bring them back on Saturday with the rest of the family. ‘From the start of the coronavirus crisis, we have done our best… to be there as much as possible for everyone who is looking for support in uncertain times,’ the king said.
‘It is a difficult time for everyone…we have heard the poignant stories in many meetings with you, in person and digitally. We feel connected with you and with all those people who have been directly or indirectly affected.’
The message, recorded at the family home in The Hague, concluded with the king stating: ‘We are part of this. But we are not infallible.’
Prime minister Mark Rutte earlier accepted full responsibility for the trip, saying he had made an error of judgement.''

I'm so glad to hear that Josy.
I know the anxiety and even fear felt waiting for test results.
It's really horrible.
So glad you got the better news, bless him.

I cant type how much I'm thinking n caring about your dad.

I cant type how much I'm thinking n caring about your dad.We arent allowed into the home (no one is) and the residents are isolating in their own rooms, the home he is in has been really good following the guidelines from the beginning of this tbf to them, this particular outbreak was caused due to a staff member having it without symptoms and they were great with letting us know straight away and keeping us updated the whole time.
On the other hand there is a different care home near us and an outbreak was reported yesterday with 18 residents testing positive within a few days, they must be ignoring guidelines somewhere imo.

Well I'm sorry, but it cant be the residents..so if its not dodgy flu jabs it can only be the carers.
So what now for them all?

Oh phew the waiting must have been horrible x
The uncertainty that is being generated across so many aspects of our lives by covid could ultimately be more damaging than the immediate health risk. Uncertainty leads to anxiety which directly affects mental health and that type of illness is not easily recovered from

...I would say that it’s far too late on the clock for this to be thought about applying if it ever would have been, which I doubt...Far too late, there are automated systems in pretty much every industry that will alter on Sunday morning regardless and would take much longer than a couple of days to reprogramme if changing the clocks was abolished.
Also, yes there's debate about doing away with daylight savings, but we're CURRENTLY in BST which is the "fake" time, if we were to abolish changing the clocks (which is often discussed), it would be BST that goes and we would be on GMT year round... Which is what we're switching to on Sunday...
I do get the argument for maintaining more daylight in the afternoon with everyone stuck at home - but it's not like it makes a huge difference. The UK has short days in winter and there's no way to avoid that... You don't get extra daylight by changing the clocks, you just get it at a different time. It's not like dawn is particularly early so we miss out. We get the daylight we get, more daylight in the afternoon just means less in the morning.
